Puppy Eating Grass

Hello,

We just picked up our 8wk old male GSD Bentley. He is a good boy, but everytime we take him outside to go to the bathroom all he does is eat grass, mud, leaves, and sticks. I think he gets distracted and forgets what he is out there for. Any suggestions on breaking this or is it just a puppy thing?

THanks

My 10 week old does the same thing. I was worried she was one of those "Pica Pets" (which is actually a disorder where they eat stuff like that), but my vet said at this point it's probably because A) She's teething and B) GSDs are just really mouthy little creatures...Mine will chew/eat on just about anything you put in front of her. We have little landscaping pebbles in the yard, and I'm constantly having to get them out of her mouth. We actually have bare spots in our yard from her pulling up the grass and digging at the dirt. Pretty sure they grow out of it at some point. Fingers crossed anyway.

Oh gawd my boy does this as well, drives me nuts, vet says some dogs can just eat grass and it's ok, only time will really tell if its a phase or not. Still it annoys the (expletive) out of me ... This pup has like 4 brands of food wet and dry, digestible dog chews, treats, cookies... and still goes for the grass like he's never had a meal. It wouldn't bother me if I knew for sure he couldn't get sick from something he might eat off the ground... but of course I don't know that for certain...

My dog is 12 years old and eats grass everyday. She has always done this and never throws up from it. My vet said it is like a salad to her.

My oldies have a golden retriever that I'm convinced is part cow.

When you take him for walks he continually checks the different areas of grass until he finds just the right stuff to graze on.

He's probably about 7-8 years old now and has done it his entire life.

Yeah our adult GSD does it occasionally, but never to the extent our puppy does. He spends 90% of his time outside and walks doing this though and I think he forgets he needs to go to the bathroom. I'm actually hoping for the next snowstorm so it covers up the grass again!

Must be Morgan's long lost sister. Moon would have been 12 now. Every day grazing at the salad. She'd get upset if she saw the weed whacker come out to trim the edges where the mower couldn't go.
