So my pup is a little bit on the scared side. Today something happened and now he's fearful of the mirror (we were training beside it, he bumped into it and it fell on him-- it's an incredibly light mirror that I just got yesterday, but now he's scared of it). I took a little bit of time, left it on the floor (mirror-side down) for him to sniff it, gave him some of his treats beside it, trained a bit around it (we clicker train) and put it off to the side so he can see that it's off in the corner and isn't going to do any harm (but now is in a place where it won't fall on him). He's weary of it, he'll look at it for a moment and quickly walk away from it. It just happened today and I know it's a process, but I want to make sure I'm doing it right.
ALSO he has a few other miscellaneous things that he's afraid of-- like while I'm dragging the trash can to the curb on trash day, he's afraid of the noise. Should I try to do the same with the trash can like I do with the mirror? I'd also like some ideas on getting him used to just random things. I had seen in a video that this man would always do something new with his pups-- I saw him pop balloons, wiggle loud things in front of them and they were unaffected by it. I mean, clearly, I don't want a fearful pup. What can I do to keep him confident and unafraid? Thanks in advance <3 |
