Default Puppy and proper hygiene

I have a male GSD who just turned 8 months old this week. He is great we don't have a lot of issues with him. My concern is he's very good about "keeping himself clean" after he pees, but I've never once seen him clean his butt. This is starting to concern me. Now with his puffy hair on his hind legs and tail it can get a little gross. We have 2 other dogs both of which do this but he just doesn't seem to get it. Is this something he will eventually do, or do I need to find a way to encourage it?

Are his stools soft?
What is making it "gross"?

No not usually. I just notice from time to time he has a little poop on the hairs on his butt. I also am getting little "skid marks" on my carpet but I honestly can't say for sure if those are from him or not.

Is he long coated?

I know when I used to have a shetland sheepdog, I'd just periodically cut a path below his tail and between his hind legs with the scissors just to keep the hairs out of the way. A fairly narrow path can make a huge difference in a potential mess and no one even notices.

I trim the "personal" areas of my mixed breed. She also has a feathery tail like a Golden - I trim 4 to 6 inches at along the base of her tail. It makes a huge difference in keeping her clean.

Sounds like a quick use of scissors will show you why the rest of us aren't having the same problem!

Yes he is long coated. And Thank You everyone. I didn't think I'd need to go that far but it is what it is, and I want him to be clean. Thanks again everyone.

My Frisco gets a trim of the back end as he tends to have soft stools and long hair there.
