Since u guys are all so helpful on just about every topic possible, i am going to ask about the #1 issue i have.
On walks... In the beginning we would go and play and fetch and then on the way back...its like he knew the fun was over and we are going home lol he will bite my boots and wont let me walk. So i tried the "stop, ignore, praise the second he stops" as the trainer said-NOT WORKING Every 2 seconds i will stop and eyes in the air no attention and he will stop and i start walking again and same thing. So now i have noticed he does it every time we cross the street and/or when he is bored?? Of his walk! I can understand this may be part of their herding instinct but he wont let me walk for goodness sake and then he stands there in front of me as if preventing me from whats ahead. Its a little embarrasing lol esp crossing the street because he wont let go so i have to carefully pull him when the cars are coming One source said to stop walking or if not possible then control the situation and do not allow him to do but i cant keep him from doing it. I have tried running with him I have tried treats when he is good (not doing that) I have tried giving him his neon orange thing i throw for him so he can concentrate on it and not my boots Nothing works

Toys. Toys, toys, toys. Toys everywhere - on your person and within reach, no matter where you are. Cram one in his mouth when he gets bitey. Teach him to to carry a ball on walks. Crate the little snot for a brief timeout if he just won't stop. It will get better.

THIS IS AMARETTO EXACTLY.
I am so frustrated with this. To make road crossing safer, I keep a VERY valued squeaky snake with me. When we cross, I shake the snake and she bites the snake to cross. Though sometimes, I am unprepared (like on late night potty trip), and then I stand there and get bitten to tears.

Is that some kind of unpleasant taste
No i havent tried anything like that Particularly because i dont want to expose him to unnatural things...must be safe i guess if that i what its for-pets I dont even use soap with him in the bath. I have always just rinsed him in plain water and it works. I suppose i can try it but i am not sure about spraying my clothes with it. Its a spray? Last edited by Jen&Bear; 01-31-2012 at 12:04 AM. |

It might not work. They sell bitter apple spray at the pet store. I sprayed it on my hands...Amaretto LOVES it. I wouldn't directly spray it in her mouth since it has alcohol in it.
Following this thread to see what works. Thanks Jen&Bear for putting my thoughts and problems into words.

Keep in mind the 4 steps to break a dog out of any bad behavior. Positive Reinforcement of Alternate Behaviors, Management of the Problem and Setting the Dog up to Succeed, Consequences for the Problem Behaviors, Consistency in Dealing With Problem Behaviors. The bitter apple spray falls under the Management, which is removing the opportunity the dog might make the incorrect choice.
Keep in mind the biting also could mean your dog still has anxious energy to spend. So a longer walk, or a run to help deplete the energy for the day will calm him down. |
