Hey Everyone,
Our 1st 24hrs home was a huge success and we are still 100% accident free which is great. Rico has seemed to set into a nice routine and now even walks to the door with you instead of having to be carried like before. However, I have a few concerns that I thought I would run past everyone and see what you guys (ladies ) thought. He seems to be quite sleepy and more or less a lazy pup. When the kids are around he will play with them and LOVES to snuggle but doesnt really do any independent play and just plops down to rest. Is this normal being that he is still fairly new to our environment or could something more serious be wrong? I should add that he is eating good, drinking good, and pooping/peeing good. Which leads me to my next question. He is a sloppy sloppy drinker . I mean steady stream running out the side of his mouth after having his head in the water bowl drinking. Is this just puppy slop or again something else? Lastly, he has no interest in treats which is definitely a first for me. We tried bacon strips, jerky, marrow chews, and now have chicken flavor Blue bits by Blue Buffalo specifically used for training and still its a no go. He will sniff it MAYBE lick it but then turn his head and keep walking. Am I doing something wrong? I am giving them to him immediately after pottying to reinforce the good behavior and keep up the no accidents run we are having but hes not interested. Could it be hes still warming up to us? We still give him vocal and physical praise but wanted to treat him as well. Are there really dogs/puppies that dont like treats? That seems to be it so far but I'm sure more questions will come up in time. I'm sorry for asking so much but im definitely admitting to be a paranoid, overprotective new momma .

some dogs just don't have much food drive and can take or leave food/treats. I currently have a foster pup and she doesn't really care about food or treats really. I try giving her a little treat for sitting or coming to me on command but she really doesn't want them she does however LOVE praise. All about finding what works for your pup my older pup (1 yr) has CRAZY food drive and will do anything for any possible scrap you might give her. Also give her time to settle in. I got the foster pup yesterday and she was pretty active and doing good well this morning she didn't want to wake up hubby took her outside and she just laid down then we came in and she just curled up on the couch with me and slept then I put her in her kennel with breakfast and she didn't eat it just went to sleep. Every so often she woke up and took a few bites of kibble then went back to sleep. Of course I started freaking out that she was sick or something wrong but after about 4 hours of napping she finally got up and was going full speed. They don't act like themselves for a few days after coming home and pups sleep alot just calm down if yours is eating, drinking, and pottying fine just let him go and let him settle in.

When you brought home your brand new baby, did he get up and romp around and play the 1st few weeks?
![]() New puppies are just like that! Give him time. Rest and time...

Are you saying that you only have him for 24 hours? If that's the case... I'd suggest you sit back, let him settle in... In a few weeks, the little aliens will possess him, and turn him into a terror. He'll landshark, and bite everything in it's path. He'll want to eat everything left unprotected. He'll bark at the kitchen sink when he's thirsty. THEN, after all that's complete, he'll become the most loyal best friend you'll ever have. ![]() God luck with your new pup. I'd suggest you stick around, there's a ton of knowledge floating around here. |

You sound like a concerned and attentive owner. Don't worry. You're doing great!

Haha definitely. If he continues to have little energy and you are still concerned in a few weeks time, I would have a vet check him out to make sure he doesn't have any physical/health problems.
