Default Eating away from dish???

Hey Everyone,

Im new to this whole puppy phase and have a question about what I have noticed our new furbaby doing. We just got him today and I know he's in a new surrounding and new people but was wondering if this was normal or something we can possibly deter. When we put his dish down with food and water he would walk over drink and grab some kibble but instead of eating there over the dish would walk to another spot and eat it. He did it numerous times which had me thinking it wasnt just a one time deal and have never seen or heard another dog do that before. Another thing is he cries (wimpers) ALOT and I wasnt sure if it was just him nervous about everything or if something might really be wrong? I should mention that he is 4mos old (pic posted in introduction forum under new mom & member).

Thanks in advance everyone and hope to make some great friends and definitely learn lots of stuff while here

This is normal. He wants to see everything that's going on and he can't see if his head is stuck in a food bowl. So he brings some with him while he has a look around. For the first few days stand by him while he eats his meals, so he'll start getting used to the idea of eating over his bowl, instead of taking his food to go.

Crying and whimpering is pretty normal for a puppy in a new place. Has your vet done a wellness exam on him yet?

What emoore said. I had to feed my pup out of a glass pie plate because he doesn't like putting his face into a bowl. And he still will stop eating if I leave the kitchen so I feed him while I'm getting our breakfast/dinner ready. Congrats on the new pup!

Thank you for the quick response. Its reasuring knowing that whats going on is fairly normal and nothing major. He has a appt next week with the vet for full exam and vaccinations if needed .

Frodo also took kibble out of his bowl and would bring to living room where we usually were. He would also reach paw into water bowl and tip it over. Thank goodness thats over. Good luck with your new puppy.

Juno does this too. I'm glad I'm not the only one. It can be a bit annoying at times. Kibble is relatively easy to clean up when she grabs a mouthful and follows me around while eating it, dropping bits everywhere. It's eating raw chicken in different places around the room that gets me. Good thing I've got easy to clean wood floors. That being said, she is getting better about it the older she gets!

My 3 year old does this too. It's funny, I didn't know other peoples' dogs did this. She will take a mouthful of kibble and bring to another room and eat it. I don't know why they do that.
