Hello all:
This is my first post here. It looks like an awesome forum for GSD owners! My question is to those that have regulated a pup's water intake from the beginning of ownership and how to get that dog to by himself regulate water intake. The reason why I ask is because if there is a water bowl left out the dog will drink, and drink, and drink some more. Thanks for any suggestions, M P.S. I should probably tell you how old he is. My pup is 9 months old. |

Well, the routine all started when he was a pup while crate-training. When he is around bowls that are perpetually filled (like at my mother-in-law's) he will drink constantly and need to go outside every half-hour to hour, depending upon play.

Honestly, I think he will self-regulate in a few days of realizing the water will always be available to him. It might be kind of like food to him now; he's learned that water only appears occasionally so he drinks as much as he can while he can.
My pup is 7 months old (just) and I've never restricted water, not even at night. Since he was 10 weeks old he hasn't had to go out at night, and since about 5 months, he'll go out at 8-8:30 pm and is good until at least 8 am. He hasn't slept at night in his crate since then, either. When he drinks, however, it's a GIANT mess. He LOVES him his water, LOL. Sigh.... I would maybe try leaving the bowl down and filled for at least 3 days and seeing if he'll regulate himself. He will quickly learn to hold it more, I bet. Good luck! |

I do not like to urge people to run to the vet for every little problem that arise but is it possible he could have a medical reason that he thinks he needs to drink so much water?

Ma'am, but you're welcome!
![]() Yes, you might consider diabetes, or something, but see what happens after a couple days. If after, they still are drinking like crazy, you might call your vet too. |

Some dogs are just bowl emptiers if it's there they have to empty it however I would listen to rocketdog and leave it filled constantly (when you have time off work so you can do all the potty breaks) and just test the theory if after a few days he's not drinking less I'd take him to the vet to rule anything out.
I have a friend whos dogs will empty any bowl they find once switching to a raw diet they did dramatically lower their water intake but be careful if he's chugging it because theres the possibility of bloat from inhaling too much air while gulping water.
