Default Baths and Biting

Help. Yesterday we were giving our 7 month old pup a bath and our guy curled his upper and lower lips and bit my husband very, very hard. It was scary. He is usually a goofy, fun loving guy, a sweetheart. Both parents are schutzhund and we are raising him as a pet. He is enrolled in puppy class. Should I be worried?

You might want to look him over and make sure there is not a cut or anything on him. That could be why.

next time muzzle. shampoo , rinse, repeat.

this is part of basic care , the dog was way out of line , with this defensive bite. Time for obedience .
You should be able to handle the dog anywhere , anyplace, anytime. What next, you take the dog to the vet and place him on the table- oh wait , he bites you when you surround him with your arms to lift him, he bites the vet when he palpates the stomach , puts a thermometer up his anus .
Does not matter what his parents were - schutzhund is not a reason for this , ever .

That is a wonderful answer. I have been touching him all over, everywhere, since he was a baby. This new side of him is alarming and really worrisome. I guess I will continue and see what happens. Many thanks.

Great post from Carmen!

Schutzhund lines, pet lines, WHATEVER.....biting is not an acceptable expression of displeasure. Just remember who buys the dog food!

Time for a real obedience class!

Well, something has to be done. He shows his upper and lower teeth when I ask him to get up now. Oh great.

The first time that the shi tzu that I grew up with ever bit me was during bath time-it was a hard, blood drawing bite and he was a biter for the rest of his life. On the other hand, my parents didn't get him any training or behavior evaluations. I would be concerned if I were you and I'm sure you're going to call a trainer or behaviorist. Good luck.

Vet visit is in order.
But also do you practice "nothing in life is free" (NILIF) with him?
If not you should.
Also these techniques work for us - although we rarely have to do them (and usually don't) with our own dogs. We do recommend them for insecure dogs and ones who think they "wear the pants" in the home!

Great read. I am already tethering him to my foot while he is on his bed. It's working. Many thanks!
