The thing with the crate is if you go slow you could create issues. If he always cries when you come near he is probably thinking you will let him out so until he understands that he only gets out when he is quiet I would put a blanket over the door so he can't see you. It sucks when they have been so good and you want to let them out but you can't because they just started crying. Just remember never let your pup out when it is crying no matter how bad you feel. This is why you must make sure they have gone potty first so you know they are not crying because they have to go. Put him in to eat his dinner or to chew on a yummy bone and he will start to think it is a good thing.
Also with puppies as young as yours I don't try to coax or anything I just pick them up and put them in. Once they are a little older maybe 3-4 months you can start doing fun kennel games like run in and you get a treat but I wouldn't try to do that at the same time as you are trying to get him used to the kennel. Ok.. I will try to correct my behavior for my dogs sake. Lol.
Just to be clear... At night, potty, crate... Howl, cry, whine but not let back out except to potty in an hour or two. During the day, I put him in then let him out when he stops crying. And repeat a couple times a day. .?? So there is no limit on how long I let him cry?

At first you need to anticipate his needs. During the night wake him up to take him out for a potty then back to bed. You don't want to get into the habit of letting him wake you up to go potty because that conflicts with him being quiet in his crate. And it usually does become a habit ![]() I also like to take my puppies in the car with me in their crates if I am running a short errand. Sometimes not even to take them somewhere it just gets them used to travelling in the crate. Most young puppies figure out the crate thing in 24-48 hours if you are consistent.
