Viking's been a little bundle of surprises. I knew a puppy would be work but I never realized how much work it would be. It's okay though because it's totally worth it. I knew to expect frequent potty breaks, screaming in the crate while crate training, puppy ADD, etc. Those didn't surprise me.
However, what I wasn't prepared for was the loudness. He's a VERY talkative little puppy. He whines and barks a lot when he's in the ex-pen and we're not paying attention to him. We try to ignore that to avoid condoning that sort of behavior. However, sometimes in the car or just in general he makes a yelping sound. He doesn't look afraid and most of the time his tail is up or wagging when he makes this noise. They're little puppy sounds. The vet and the people at the natural food store said he was just being very talkative. He does this especially loudly when he sees other dogs but he never attacks them he just wants to play with them (they are put off by his loudness though). I never know whether or not to ignore this sort of talking. Is it just talking or is it the same as rewarding whining? He does this a LOT! Is it normal?

Very normal.
My oldest male is a very loud talker. Even in his old age. He sounds like a cross between Scooby Doo and a humpback whale. I don't know what other members on here do with their talkers.....but I talk back to mine. |

Our 9 week old boy does the same thing! We have nicknamed him Sr Whinny Butt because of this. When we go to the vet or a car ride it is the worst, he is deffinetly not scared he just doesn't want to do what we are doing and is letting it known to all! Good luck with yours!!!!

Every single one of my male GSDs have been talkers and whiners...I don't encourage it, especially out in public or around other people or dogs, but I also don't make a huge deal out of it and understand that it is a part of who they are.
One thing you can do is teach a "quiet" command as well as a "speak" command. This way you have a bit more control over it and when it happens. |

I can do that with my old cat (who lives with my dad now)! We could just talk and talk and talk. He would wait for me to respond and everything.
Viking does that too, when I talk to him. He quiets down and listens. Quote:
