Default Other dog smells in the house.

We are about to begin our second journey with a new GSD puppy. Our first Shepherd was a neutered male, almost 12 before we recently had to set him free to the Rainbow Bridge. Aside from the rare accident (upset stomach or digestion) he never went in the house and certainly never peed or sprayed. As it stands, however, our house is a mecca of male GSD smells when it comes to a dogs nose. We are looking at probably foregoing the neuter thing with our new male or at least waiting until maturity. We are concerned that as our new pup is developing, he will want to mark over the first dog's scent. Our question is will the smell of our first GSD present problems for us with an un-neutered male upbringing? Does anyone have any tips or suggestions?

If the first dog never marked in the house, there's no scent to "mark over", so I don't think you'll have a problem. Marking in the house is usually due to a lack of training, not because of aged dog scent.

Okay - makes sense. Just didn't know if simply the smell of another male would cue some kind of response. I know sometimes dogs just do things that they're "wired" to do. With our first dog this wasn't an issue as we hadn't owned a dog prior. It's been a long time since we had a pup so my wife and I are going to need to brush up on our knowledge and do our research. Thanks.

I had a thread on here this week about my dog marking for the first time in the house where the cat has been laying. Educate me please on how a lack of training is the culprit.

To the Op, I just had this happen this week and there was no previous marking for him to smell. I think because he is unsure of the cat is the reason that he did it. He is almost 18 mo, unaltered, and he has been potty trained since he was 3mo old.

I have never had a dog mark in my house. I'm on my third male.
