Default Mouthy five month old - how to correct

hi, I have a mouthy 5 month old female, who will try to bite my hand when I a) grab her collar to put on/off her leash b) if she's playing with other dogs and I sit down with my friend on the grass, she'll come over and start biting us (I understand she's playing and wants to engage with us but we want her to play with other dogs too). c) when she's walking outside and gets overexcited sometimes, she'll jump up to bite our hand or clothes (she came close to our faces a few times ). d) WHENEVER I touch her collar (except when she's in the car; then she's the perfect dog and I can do just about anything to her )

How would you correct this? I've been doing a quick hard tug on the leash and then a firm no. But I don't always have the leash if it's inside or outside playing.

You get to read thru this yet? (click ----> Puppy BITING!!! Teaching Bite Inhibition )

You are in good company and it takes some time to work thru this as a common issue.

Most people I run into and see her chomp on my hand when I get at her collar are coming off like this is serious situation that must be dealt with immediately.

I've read through it and am following. Also beating NILIF down to a science.

Thank you for your prompt reply. I was mainly concerned that a 5 month old should know better already since we've been correcting her.

People that don't have GSD's have no idea what they are seeing. Teeth = Agression is NOT necessarily true. For our puppies it's more Teeth = Play (but painful for the delicate humans )

Keep in mind it IS play and we want our pups to play. So the emphasis needs to be much more on US and the teaching the 'new' way to play. NOT ON CORRECTING THE PLAY BEHAVIOR.

We want our pups to play. If we continuously correct we have damaged a bond we should have had with our dog, and we have removed a fantastic reward from our training bag of tricks. ENGAGEMENT is key to good training, and using toys (and PLAYING ) is part of that.

If it's any comfort, my Gunner is now 6 months old and is still chomping a little.

HOWEVER...

There is a point that I can see him make a concientious decision. He goes to bite on my son's arm and just before he gets to it, he moves and finds his bear and bites on that bringing it to my son.

There is a light at the end of the tunnel.

I spent every day for the last month, putting other things in his mouth and it seems to have stuck. (He still chomps on me though and that's 'cause he know that I do a lot of the playing)

Keep at it, don't give up.

Thanks for making that point. I play/interact with Athena more than anyone in my household (and I emphasize MOST). I know she's not doing it to hurt me but sometimes it's just so frustrating. I definitely redirect her when i'm inside or give her a cookie to get her leash on but I wish I could do something so she wouldn't associate the leash as bad and bite me. Maybe she's just distrustful of people being so close to her neck?
