Question Help

Hi there.

I just bought a new German Shepard puppy and he's only six weeks old.

I'm struggling a little bit (ok, a lot) with how to deal with him and have been a little stressed.

He seems to be suffering from separation anxiety (whining, crying) and I've been told that he actually should have stayed with his mother at least until 8-9 weeks of age, however, I was unaware of this. As I said, I just got him recently (4 days ago) and it's been a pretty stressful 4 days.

We're due to start weekly puppy classes Thursday evenings for 6 weeks and I'm hoping that will help, but he doesn't seem to understand that when we go out, he needs to poop and pee, and sometimes he just goes anywhere he wants in my apartment (I am probably going to need to either buy or rent a house soon).

I also have him in a 42" cage/crate at night, however since I'm away for work during the day, I put his bed, water, toys and a puppy training pad down for him in my kitchen.

I was considering doggy day care but am not sure.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks.

He is WAY too young, is there any way you can take him back to the breeder till he is at least 8 weeks old?

Puppy classes this Thursday??? WAY TOO SOON!!! He doesn't even have shots I'm sure. I'm surprised any training facility will let you bring such a young puppy, specially without having had ALL his vaccines yet.

Yes, you are right, 6 weeks is too soon to go to their new homes.

Where is your puppy being crated?

Your puppy is too little and too young to be fully potty trained so he will have accidents in your house. You need to make sure you take him out to potty every 20-30 minutes and look for signs that he needs to potty.

I would section off his crate at night so he doesn't have that much room, he will potty in his crate if he has enough room to do it.

During the day I would not leave water in his crate, if he feels its ok to potty in his crate he may be harder to potty train later on.

Do you have a friend or relative that can come to your house and let him out a couple of times while you are at work?

What state are you in? Many states have laws about selling puppies that young, although unfortunately some states don't care.

Yes, actually he has had some of his shots, except rabies which they said was acceptable to do at 16 weeks.

He is crated at home in my apartment, however, i don't crate him during the day as he is in my kitchen with his bed and a training pad.

I am in Pennsylvania.

Thanks.

Doug

I would wait to start training until your puppy has had all of his shots. You do not need him catching an illness, especially parvo.

Do you keep his crate in your bedroom or is he crated in another room at night?

The reason why he is crying at night time is because he has been taken away from his family and he is in a strange place and cannot see you.

Try putting his crate in your room tonight, I bet you he wont cry all night.

I did not have a problem with either of my dogs crying at night because they are crated in my room with me. They know I am there with them because they can see me and that gives them peace of mind.

You're welcome.

This thread was about a puppy crying all night, the puppy was crated in another room, once we told the OP to crate the puppy in their room the puppy stopped crying. OMG, what a night!
