Okay so my almost 11 week old gsd is biting hard! I try and yelp to make her stop but it only seems to excite her causing her to bite more. I try and ignore her / walk away but she just follows me nipping at my ankles. I do not want to use her crate as punishment so what can I do to give her a 'time out' so she understands that biting hurts and its not okay!

It seems that this happens to many of us with GSD puppies. I was totally surprised at what a landshark my girl was at the age.
Having done all the tips that obedience classes teach: yelp, say ow, turn your back, walk away, distract with a toy....on and on...sometimes nothing works. By 14 weeks and the bites getting harder, I bought some bitter apple spray and would spray it in her mouth when she would bite me. Other times I would shake a can of coins and say No very sternly.

Part of the reason for crate timeout is for your sanity, not for punishment. It is good to get away for a while. The landshark phase can last for several weeks and you need a break at times. We used all the techniques also. The coin can, the OUCH, the spray in the face (with water, of course), the NO BITE! and on and on. She seemed to bite my wife a LOT more than me. My wife would say NO BITE and chew her out soundly. DON'T YOU DARE BITE ME, YOU ARE THE DOG AND I AM THE HUMAN. Just the stern tone gave the puppy pause, she would sit there and tilt her head from side to side. One other technique I used was putting my finger down her throat when she got my hand. If she bit I would grab her head and put my finger down her throat. No harm was done, she wasn't hurt, she was just 'inconvenienced' and it made her think twice about grabbing that hand. Most biting is for play and her mouth is all she has to work with. She is testing so she shouldn't be punished too much beyond letting her know that she made a bad choice.

When your puppy bites you use that word - VERY LOUD - IPE! and then stop playing. If the pup continues say it again and then remove yourself from the puppy. I like having pens for this purpose - I can easily removed myself from the puppy (by stepping over the pen) without having to put then in a crate or anything.

Removing the puppy from the family circle/proximity for 5 minutes each time worked for me. I put her outside in a small fenced area and closed the back door.
I tried EVERYTHING and this worked the best. I guess it depends on your dog, maggie didn't like being seperated from us and left outside so I guess that's why it worked, results may differ for other pups. |

Any kind of yelping at Shasta just made her more excited. When the biting would get to a point where I just couldn't handle it anymore, I'd pop her in her crate. I looked at it more as a management tool until she outgrew the behavior rather than a punishment or training of any kind. As long as your pup enjoys crate time, I wouldn't worry about it seeming like a punishment. If you're still worried about it, don't do anything before hand that would cause her associate the crate time with the biting...no yelping, no can rattling, no "leave its" or whatever.

I guess I was lucky, the yelp and a toy instead any part of me worked. Plus he was told NO BITE! Good luck with your pup, I guess some are more amped than others.
