Default Had a visitor this morning . . .

The dogs were barking up a storm at the picture window, so I went to check it out, and a big ole moose is standing there munching away on the bushes. Complete un-fazed by the crazed dogs, but as soon as I showed up, (s)he looked up and started lumber away away. I ran to get my camera and got this pic through the window:

Then I ran outside and got this one before he got too far for pictures.

This guy/gall was massive!!! Often see moose in the area on on the property, but this one was BIG! I'm thinking a male because of his size. Males shed their rack in the fall, and grow a new set in the spring. In close to 10 years of living here, this was the first time I've been able to actually get a picture of a moose close by!

Or if she's a she, when she brings her little bambino around, she'll be fierce! Such a great shot, Look at that thick coat!

Oups! It is a cow moose - was able to identify her after some internet research.

LOL Jane and Diane - cows with calfs are fierce! They have been known to kill people and dogs. Last winter I was threatened by a cow moose with a calf who felt trapped in the driveway between me and Gryffon. I was at the house end, Gryffon was on the road end (marking territory), and the cow didn't know which way to go. The snow was piled several feet high on each side, so wouldn't have been able to cut across.

I was trying to (gently) shoo her towards the road, but with Gryff at the other end, she would have none of it. Gryffon was ignoring the moose - he would glance up at them, then go back to sniffing for passing dogs who left their mark.

Did you know that a Cow Moose with a calf will give you a warning much like a dog if she feels threatened? Lowers her head to stare at you straight in the eyes, flattens the ears back, and growls. Very effective display, I backed away pronto!

Went in the house, came out with . . . a ski pole, haha!!!! Again, gently moved forward to shoo them towards the road, and this time, keeping more distance between them and myself, they turned and trotted off. Phew!

And there are probably plenty roaming about your area too, so big, yet they can blend right in. Ski Pole! Your as bad as my dad and his moose "shooing" shovel. He has one that likes to come in and munch on his tasty landscape plants, its a younger bull. I tell him he's nuts, let him have the bush. Nice pictures!

Awesome! We first saw a moose on a ski trip to Jackson Hole many years ago. One day we did a side trip to Yellowstone, and every time we saw a moose, we'd pull over and take a picture. Moose stalkers! We kept our distance, people in town had told us that they can be nasty and will even attack a car, so we were careful.

Thats what I was seeing, and too bad there wasn't a huge rack for the dogs to chew on.
