How did he react to the statues? He's a nice looking boy.

Can't wait to visit family, bring Akira and get her picture there as well.
I only wish our Dobie was still here to stand next to the dobie statue!!!

Funny you ask, I didn't even anticipate him reacting to the statues, but he did. It was quite amusing! He was clamoring to get at the statues, crying and barking. He was very perplexed when he got in close for a sniff. He individually verified that each statue was indeed, a statue.

If you're at Lackland visiting the monument you may be interested in checking out the 341st. There's around 1000's MWD's there. They regularly train on various obstacle courses, fun to watch all the different MWD's.

How touching, I'm in tears already.
I could hardly visit in Vietnam and Korean War monuments in DC, the contrast between being visually stunning and what they represent is too much to handle.

These dogs have put many of bad guys in tears as well . Here's my buddy's retired MWD, they served a couple tours together. He's currently deployed with his current MWD. Fortunately, the training director of my club was able to kennel his retired MWD, I could only imagine how the typical "pet resort" boarding kennels would deal with a dog like this.

He's living the good life now, still loves to work, and even gets to prove he's "still got it" every now and again

Thank you. The 4th dog is a Belgian Malinois, like the one in the videos I posted.

I have mixed feelings about the monument naming the breeds, particularly the Malinios. Obviously all the breeds deserve the respect, but I think the Mals would be better off without the attention. Unlike the GSD, Lab, and Dobie, the general population is largely unfamiliar with the Malinois breed...which IMO is a good thing. With the monument on the parade ground where the Air Force troops graduate, thousands of people visit it each week. Just like what had happened when the media publicized a Malinois used for the Bin Laden raid, you end up with an influx of people deciding they want a Malinois. The majority of these people don't realize that Mals usually do not make great pets (especially for the typical busy American family) and find out that they can't handle the dog...consequently they end up in shelters and/or are euthanized.
