I am new to this site. So far have found a lot of great information. My husband and I got married in December and last week we added Elektra, an 8 week old german shepherd to our family! Her father was an all white german shepherd and her mother was all black. I never even knew german shepherds could be all black or all white! My husband had been reading and researching them for awhile and we found a good breeder family locally and are so excited to have her. She has been a lot of fun! Tonight will be a week since we brought her home. We have been click training her and have been surprised at how fast she is learning. I knew they were smart, but wow! I am anxious to meet others on this site and learn more information about my dog and how to train her successfully and provide a happy life for her!

What a cutie!
Now for the breeder question~ does that mean the father was probably a sable with the white masking gene?

Any of the breeders on here can answer too.
In order to have a sable puppy, one of the parents must be sable. So, if the mother was all black, then the father has to be sable. I find all this so interesting but never seem to remember the answer to the question. lol

Yes. If you breed a black dog to a white dog and get a sable puppy, the white dog is genetically sable, with a white masking gene.

Sables change so much it's hard to tell. She doesn't look like she has a saddle. The dog on the left in Emoore's picture is a sable.
Check out this thread Sables The white masking gene just covers up the dog's true color. If ppl know your general vicinity they might be able to help you locate a good trainer.
