Yes I remember the thread about the incident at the dog charity.

IMO you sort of have to break through the ice. With time, dedication and practice you'll see less of that attitude.......

I know there are some working line/protection dog breeders in central Florida who could probably help you find groups/trainers. When I was looking for my dog in 2010 I found several as I was willing to go to Florida....also look for Malinois breeders in your area that can give you references. A lot of time these breeders know the best trainers and groups in your area. You may not have to join a club at first either....

I have been wanting to do it for years and years... just never had the dog for it. It was expected at all, but if he can do it... why not try! I'm not expecting to be at the top.. just learn and enjoy. Duke, in my opinion, really shows potential. I would love to get a professionals opinion on that. Just not too sure where to go. I know there is a club out in Cocoa Beach which isn't too far... but, I wasn't too fond of the guy I spoke with from there at a dog charity event. They were doing a demo and he was incredibly rude. If he's nothing more then a picture guy or a paper pusher.... then I will still look into them. But if he's a trainer... no way is that man going near my dogs... or getting my money.

I wish I knew more here in Orlando that had experience with this so I could get a heads up on where to go and where not to. Time to start searching though I guess.

Oooh... you might have to send me their information. See which one's closest and also just in case I truly do not like the other. And I would LOVE to have you join us and see how Dooney does! I know I am super excited about it!

Yeah, being in the horse world my whole life.... I can understand that. Just haven't been "new" to something in a while.... guess I just need to put up with him if everything else is right there.

And I will definitely talk to all of them. Though, I must say.... I've never been able to find ANYONE here doing Shutzhund or protection sports... just the police k-9 branch. If I can find any I will definitely ask them! Though, if you know of any knowledgeable ones, please let me know! I just want to find the right place. Even if he doesn't do well... I still want to learn. It's been something I've been wanting to do for so many years now!

In red - BOY oh BOY do I know what you mean. I've been involved in horses since the 1970s they were my heart and passion. Had to take a financial break from them and have always loved GSDs.....but you are so right it is hard to be 'new' at something especially when you've got a few miles on the old chassis!

I just keep my mouth shut and listen and learn.....but I'm also really lucky to have an excellent trainer. He's got over 20 years of experience breeding and titling his OWN dogs, in addition to training others, he's a helper too. Yet with ALL of his experience he doesn't feel the need to make any of us newbies feel stupid, he's a really good guy, imposing in stature but truely confident. As such doesn't feel the need to be a bully or rude with his students as a look or tone of voice suffices....(I tell you this for a reason....)

I'll PM you some links I found a while back. They hopefully should be able to give you some leads at least.
