Luckily I was warned ahead of time as the transport was coming that the dogs had ticks, but YUCK. The boarding vet dipped them when they got out of the shelter but these were all on his neck. I guess the dip doesn't kill what it doesn't reach? I've never ever had a dog with ticks so this was a first for me. Luckily I had researched how to properly remove them (hopefully I did it right) weeks ago when we took two of ours camping at a state park....

Yeah, they are nasty looking critters, aren't they? What is the proper way to remove them. How did you kill them? I usually put a match to them and they go up with one shhhhhhhhhh

I think that because you shared the gross bugs... you need to share the cute foster puppy

I heard and read not to use matches, etc. I'm not sure why matches can't be used because I know growing up that's what the parents always did. But I read to use tweezers and grasp the head firmly right by the skin of the dog and pull straight out. The goal is to remove the tick alive and intact, because if you kill or squish it while on the dog it will expell the contents of its body into the dog, furthering the risk of the dog contracting any diseases the tick had. These all came off alive and kickin (yes it is a NASTY as it sounds watching their little legs twitch around!!) and with a little chunk of puppers skin....
Here is the puppy

Those ticks look entirely different than the ticks I see around my property, I have not seen any on the dogs, just on me.
![]() The ticks around here are more round in shape, and dark brown.
