If you choose to get the d40 I wouldn't waste the money on the d40x. I believe the only difference is the megapixels which is not all that important and actually hurts alittle on the noise at higher ISO. My d200 was 10MP and it worked for weddings and portraits.

There is a big difference between the D40 and the D40x, with the D40 you are limited to AF-S lenses only (if you want auto focus). Where with the D40x you can use any of the Nikon lenses.

I am sorry but you are incorrect the d40x is just like the d40 in autofocus department. it will only autofocus with AF-s and AF-I glass.

upgrades for $200
10.2 MP opposed to 6.1MP
3FPS opposed to 2.5FPS
Lower ISO starting 100 opposed to 200
better battery life.
Yet this camera does not have its own AF motor in body.

Kristi, if you don't plan to go PRO and don't plan on buying expensive lenses in the future, buy the D40, it is a great camera and takes gorgeous pictures without spending too much. Otherwise, go with the D80 or D90, however these are close to a grand in price.

I started with a D40 but sold it and got a D80 once I got serious into Schutzhund photography and needed better lenses. Otherwise, I would have kept my D40, it was so easy to use. Excellent camera for beginners.

I have Canon, so, can't really comment on the Nikon models, however, 1 piece of advise: When starting your investment in digital SLR, consider upgrading your lens collection over more expensive bodies. An upgrade lens on a entry level body will produce sharper photos than a more expensive body with the kit lens.
Also, lenses hold their value very well.

Good luck!

I have to agree with JakeR. I would suggest looking into a used d50 or a d70. You can pick up a good used d50 for like $300 with a kit lens. You can then pick up a good third party lens (sigma, tamron) Nikon glass will hold its value or even appreciate over time assuming that you take care of it. You can also pick used d200 for around $700 and in my opinion this is one of the best cameras nikon ever made assuming you are outside or have a hot shoe flash like a sb600 or sb800. If you are on a budget consider a d50 or d70 and get a Sigma 70-200 2.8 lens for a good fast telephoto on a budget.
