Default Some puppy OB (video)

What do you do when dog training gets cancelled? Train of course. Kiersten and I decided to take the puppies to a park they hadn't been to. They did great. I'm pleased with how they are progressing.

Thats awesome! Can I ask, does he walk like that on the lead, or only you have treats in hand and give a heel command?

Really nice work.

I found this very instructive and inspiring.

Thanks for sharing.

I teach it in steps. I also teach all my downs from moving. The only time I do a static down is once the puppy knows how to get into the position.

I start by walking forward with the puppy in heel position when I'm ready for the down I say the word while at the same time applying slight pressure on the puppies nose in a down and back motion. During this, I move one of my legs on step forward, pause and reward the puppy. After a while I will go to two steps and so on. I also reinforce the down/stay with their food. At feeding times, I put the puppy in a down and walk away with the food dish. I then walk back to the puppy, put the food dish in between the puppies legs, get myself in to position and release to the food. Over time I lengthen how long the dog waits for the food always bringing it back to the dog. This way the dog knows I'm (and the reward) are always coming back.

Yes they will walk like that without treats or toy rewards(what I use most) and on lead. However because they are puppies I want them to think OB is fun and think that their handlers always have a reward on them.

If you're referring to casual walks, then I don't ask them to walk like that or put them on any command for that matter. Just a loose leash is all I expect.

Thanks! Exactly, fun is what it's about. With Kimber, I have been training whatever I feel like doing or see that I think looks fun/useful. I'm focusing on any sport. Just playing with my dog. It has been a blast.
