So, I am going to explore my options. After being put in a very awkward situation involving some neighborhood 'hoodlums', I have decided that I want a dog that has as much bite as they do bark. I already over time have developed a few issues about Schutzhund that I am not fond of, so I called upon a personal friend, police officer, owner/president of a dog training company and the local PSA training club. They invited me to come out and check it out and see if I am interested, and even then, he is going to help me with some " personal protection" style training... That is if we decide against the sport, he will help me teach cullen the basics of the first protection steps in the SDA ( barking/acting vicious but with an off switch). We shall see how it goes, he needs to evaluate Cullen anyhow....

OK... this group has come out before with the Schutzhund Club I am involved with, so I have seen a few mock situations, but never the deep training, so this will be interesting. I think I would like it better, and through advice posted here, I decided to jump in and at least check it out! I am stoked. I watched a Schutzhund Dog have a man REALLY coming at his owner, and when it came time, he jumped around looking for a sleeve, and then did nothing... and I don't want that... So I think I will see what he can do, as he said if I am not interested in the full sport, he will still help me with personal protection training.

But a good dog is a good dog. I expect a good GSD to go to the person attacking its owner sleeve or not. So it only proves that SchH is not doing its job to evaluate drives and nerves.

A dog is going to be confused if you have him biting a sleeve for 5 years on a field, and then suddenly ask him to perform the same action on an individual minus the sleeve, walking down the sidewalk at night. I don't see it having anything to do with nerves that a dog can't/won't attack a person, they haven't been trained to do that. I know my GSD would not bite someone attacking me. He would probably whine a lot and jump on us, but he hasn't been training to do that, so why should he? I know some GSDs are naturally protective in that sense, but they are few and far between.

I disagree DJ for must Sch clubs now they only train in prey so the dog needs the sleeve as the reward. There are a few clubs that still train in defense and prey so the dogs know they are going on the field for a fight not a reward. From having a dog trained in both defense and prey it will have a discernment of when it needs to go in the civil mode of protect owner easier.

DJ, you may understand it more if you went and observed SchH training.
Karlo could give a rip about the sleeve, it is his target but he would just as soon bite the helper without the sleeve. Because Cullen is still new to this, I think he will transition with no problem. |
