I had a couple of PM's with questions about PSA, and PSA dogs. I figured I would post some links and info, since I don't always have a ton of time to respond with the amount of information necessary to answer the questions.
I think you should watch some PSA videos of the PDC, PSA 1, 2, and 3's, and judge for yourself. Go on YouTube, and watch some of the top competitors. Janet and Zuko, Moe and Phoenix, Ariel and Blitzen, and Hill and Rex, and many others. Take a look, and see what you think. Here are a few links to get you started: Andy and Bishop, (I figured I better start with a nice GSD, a really nice young dog/handler team, in his first trial. A very nice dog, with excellent training, from my local area.) PDC : Ariel and Blitzen, Obedience: Hill and Rex, Protection: Hill and Rex, Obedience: Michelle and Zander, Obedience: Nocole and Chloe, Protection: Moe and his girl Phoenix, Protection: Arin and X, Protection: There's a cross section of some of the various levels. As you can see, it involves a high level of OB, directionals, call offs, pressure and distractions by the decoy, and environmental distractions. I like the concept of PSA, because although it is a sport, it does not involve any training that would be contrary to concepts useful to PP dogs or police dogs, which are my primary interest. If you want to learn more about PSA, browse the PSA forum sometime: www.psak9forum.com

~~~~Dog world equals small world. ~~~~~~
It sure does. We went to Ohio for the Nationals to watch. But Blitzen was to amped up in Protection(no out). Still was great to see her and all the other competitors. Vikki |
@ Vikki : Very nice that you stay involved as a breeder in your dog's accomplishments. It's the right thing to do.
![]() PSA has grown by leaps and bounds, and is going through an evolution of growth right now. It seems that a lot of people who sat back to see where it was going to go, are now getting involved. I don't think most people "on the outside" know the kind of drive, obedience, and environmental stability that is required. The best way to see what it is about is to see a trial live, for full effect. I noticed at one of the last trials I attended up in Maine, there were a lot of people from other dog sports there to "check it out" (FR, Sch people mostly) some of which are now "crossing over". There is now a Sleeve Division for the PDC, the elementary level, which lends itself nicely to Sch dogs coming over, or younger dogs that have not yet transitioned to the suit.
I think part of the evolution has been tighter obedience, and I'd put any of the good dogs on par with a decent Sch dog...but I guess to level the playing field, we would have to add multiple decoys, and distractions
![]() It's two separate animals..and tough to compare two sports that are on two completely different ends of the spectrum. Seeing an influx of sch dogs coming in will be good for the sport...the precision expected in sch is a good thing..and will raise the bar...conversely, when a sch dog crosses over, hopefully they rise to the occasion with suits, hidden sleeve on the carjack ,decoy pressure, and environmentals. Oh yeah, and sprinkle in call offs, redirects, multiple decoys, food refusal, and obstacles other than nicely painted jumps and walls...and all the other things that make psa unique.
Yes I think the OB is coming along but wish it had the SchH level of OB. With PSA being more about protection and biting and multiple attackers, etc you should see IMO better OB than in SchH. You have many PSA people saying that PSA is a "real" test of a dog and yada yada. A good PPD is only as good as his/her obedience.
I certainly agree. You can't compare the sports as they are totally different animals. Both with different goals and different mentalities. I look forward to doing it after a SchH title. The only problem is that being in AZ it is hard to practice and then travel somewhere to trial and with no west coast it makes it even more difficult. I love the scenarios and tests that are done. I wish there were more PSA events around to see but of course all the dramam that went on kind of slowed things down but hopefully this year and next, things will pick up. Andy Maly Vah (PSA1, SchH3, IPO3, PDK-9 (Ret.), CDX, RN, TC, TDI/CGC) is a great example of a SchH dog doing PSA. I know his owner/trainer and she can certainly say how the dogs that cross over will do. Not a easy thing by far. |
