Default Question of age for retirement

So I came across a gsd who is obed, protection trainded, tracking, for adoption. They said he is 3 and want to retire him. Yeah seems like such a young age for retirement. Is it?

Makes me wonder if the dog either has temperment or physical issues. I have seen dogs 8+ years old still competing(sp). In protection sports. And dogs 10+ in obedience and Rally.

At the last AKC dog show I was at there was a female lab that was competing in obedience and she was either 10 or 11. You could tell she was older as not only did she LOOK that age, but she was moving a little slow. BUT she also looked like she was having the time of her life. AND she took High in Trial!

Health reasons? Does the dog have bad hips/elbows/arthritis?

Or the dog is not as good as they would like...meaning the dog can do the work but does not have the potential to go as far as the owner/trainer would like.

My friend just put the first UD leg on an 12 year old rescue that she has had for only 2 years

So I don't feel age is an issue in Obedience or Rally

my son retired at the age of 15 due to a massive skull fracture..

He did eventually find a new career.

I know where you ran across that ad. I saw it too. I thought about emailing them to find out what was wrong with the dog but didn't because I figured the person would just try to feed me a line of bull or something =/

3 is a bit young.....

I retired Kayos at 4 but she has severe HD. She still tracks and only lacks one title for her Champion Tracker.

She goes to the vet teaching hosp at WSU for hip replacement tomorrow. She is 5.
