Default Training my dog to watch me over ball.

I have a male gsd that loves his ball. He will stare at it. He was at the trainers for 6 weeks and they trained him on the ball so you have to have the ball to make him watch you or walk good and sit stay lay down how do I make him watch me and listen to me if I don't have his ball?

Personally, I don't think this was a good start. But you can change it!
Which training method do you use? It would be a lot easier with clicker training, in my personal opinion. You could try teaching your dog to give you eye contact, then he gets the ball.
I would use shaping in this case.
Keep the ball in your pocket until he gives the eye contact, then reward with the ball.

I agree with Harley... I'd back off a bit and add the clicker. Much clearer for the dog so well worth the training we HUMANS take up to teach it

You see this yet --> Top Training Expectations for Puppies particularly -->Intro to Clicker Training (perfect for puppies!)
