Leash Length

What size do you compete with? I think I've always used the 6ft ones.

The Rally rule is 6ft (listed under RE Honor Exercise section). However, the AKC Obedience rule says it "need only be long enough to provide adequate slack during the Heel on Leash exercise." (Section 16 Obedience Regs).

The leash needs to be 6 ft for Rally Excellent only because of the honor exercise.

In Pre-Novice you also want a 6 ft leash for the stays as they are on leash.

But any other class the leash only needs to be long enough for slack for the heel on lead. I typically use a 3 ft x 1/2 inch braided leather lead for regualr obedience trialing.

In RN, Dog Sport obedience, and SchH obedience I use a 3-4' x 1/2" leash. I've seen people NQ because they have so much leash they are pulling on it with both hands, bundling it around their wrists, etc.

This is my trial leash, I hold it in my left hand and even fold the handle over to shorten it.

For RE I have a 6' only because of the honor, but it doesn't matter since the course is run off leash.

For the CKC Novice it must be a 6 ft leash, for anyone coming up here to trial.
