Hi Guys and Gals,
I have a dilemma, hoping you can help me. I will be competing with Jessi, my female Aussie, in October for UDX legs. She earned her first 2 last April ( Hooray). I may have a conflict in showing in both Open B and Utility B, as I will also be showing at an Asca show at a different show sight, with a different dog. I was thinking of having Ken handle Jessi in whichever class I may miss. So he would handle her in one, and I the other, that is permitted, correct? My other question, is, even if it is permitted, do you guys think if I can't handle her in both, I should just not enter her, or just have Ken handle her in both? Honestly, I am not even sure she would work for him. This is something we would have to start working on now, as currently, she just wiggles all the time with him, like he is a big toy or something. I don't want to cause confusion with her during a trial by us both handling her, but I also don't want to not enter her at our local shows.Opinions? |

I'm not sure I'm understanding the conflict??
Most trials will accomodate you for conflicts in showing,,I would enter, and then talk to the chief ring steward about your conflicts, hopefully they could help you out. I could NEVER have my husband handle my dogs, they won't work for him either,,they think he is just the "toy" at home LOL..and those aussies, (of which I have two!) haven't got a serious bone in their bodies, so god, it would be quite a fiasco if my hubby tried doing anything with them LOL.. Good luck !

Oops, sorry Diane, I am not having a conflict within the same show. Jessi will be competing at an AKC Trial, but I will also be leaving the show grounds to go to another show site where our Asca show will be held.
I won't be able to be at both places at once, but I am sure I will be done with the Utility class in time to leave and get to the Asca show site. Regarding Ken handling the dogs, I have to give him credit, he is actually a better handler then I am. Watching him in the ring with the dogs, is like watching poetry in motion. But....Jessi is very very velcro with me, and has never worked for him. Which is why I am concerned. And, yes, Jessi, out of all of my aussies Is the most clownish! LOL. Thanks. |

I've never seen a regulation that says this isn't permitted, at least in a "B" class. The only thing I've seen is that they want the same person who handled in the regular exercises to also handle in the stays (unless there's a conflict due to having two dogs entered in the same class). That doesn't apply to your situation though.
You have a month or two to figure out how well Jessi works for your husband and I think I'd let that by the gauge as to whether or not you allow him to handle her. You'll want to practice having him handle her without you around so he can find out how distracted she might be (would she be looking for you?). I've never been in a situation where anyone else could handle my dogs, so this is an unknown for me. But I've read through all of the regulations many times (although not recently) and I don't think I've ever seen anything prohibiting a second handler for a second class in the Open/Utility classes. The obedience regs are online so maybe a quick check would allow you to make sure. That's too bad that the ASCA show and the AKC show are at the same time! And congrats on the UDX legs you have already! Melanie and the gang in Alaska
