So I'm doing two shows back to back to try and finish Isa's RAE title. For some reason I decided to try Graduate Novice one day. I'm a little nervous as I haven't really trained her to come to me from the other side of the jump and sit in the come position. She's done jumps like it because of Rally and agility but never where you leave them and call them over the jump. I'm going to an 8 week class starting monday for her Open title but GN is similar but easier. I did this class when I was in 4H dogs with Cody and it was VERY EASY for him, always getting 198 but I'm not so sure with Isa. I have NO IDEA what posessed me to sign her up for GN!!
I have a question, am I only allowd to say, Hopp(jump) without saying Hier(come) or can I say Hopp and then say Hier? ![]() Has anyone done this class before? I think it was added last year??

Okay, I can't edit my post but I reread the rules and they say you can't tell them to come after you said jump.
One thing that confuses me is the rules for GN on the drop on recall. In GN they say: Quote:
But in the rules for Open it says: Quote:

In graduate novice, you can use a verbal command AND a hand command at the same time.
In open you can choose to use one or the other, but not both as that would be considered a double command.

The UKC Novice Obedience has a jump in the recall exercise. However, there is a person standing on each side of the jump which will probably help direct the dog. I'll be training this over the summer for a trial at our National in the fall. I figured I'd just use the "come" command because over the jump is the most direct route. Don't know about AKC,sorry.

ellie cd is right, in GN you can use both a verbal and signal for the DOR and I would do it. In regular open you can only use one. I think GN is a great place to train for open so take advantage of it by using the opportunity to command and signal so Isa has a better opportunity to be successful.
In UKC obedience you can also use a command and signal in the regular classes. When I do a recall over the jump I just use the come command. The dog should know that come means come whether there is an obstacle in the path or not. You can train this very easily and if your shows are this weekend, you can probably get Isa comfortable with this in just a few short sessions at home. Have fun and good luck. If I had not moved to lovely Oklahoma I would have entered at Canby.

Thanks for the info. I was thinking that that was what it meant but I wasn't sure.
I was wondering though, if I tell Isa platz and use a hand signal, wont she get used to seeing my hand movement with the command? That's what I'm worried about so I don't know if I should use both.

Hey Missy! I just got back from training class and I taught Havoc to recall over a jump in about 5 minutes. I think Isa will be fine with that.

I made my own type of jump with 2 chairs and a stick and did a little recall thing and she did fine. I wonder how she'll do with the broad jump though.
Another thing, I'm noticing that Isa is anticipating the down. I never had this problem with Cody so how do I fix this? She's always spitting new road blocks at me, lol.

WHen you train the DOR make sure you mix up the position you ask for the down. Sometimes drop her half way, sometimes immediately after you call her and sometimes let her come almost all the way.
And I would only drop her one time in 5 or 6 reps. I would do a lot of straight recalls too. Keep her guessing and paying attention. Anticipation shows she is learning so it is not always a bad thing.

Ooooh ok, that makes sense. I'm so use to Cody's fast learning that with Isa's "slower" learning "I" have to learn to teach things at a slower pace.
Thanks for the help.
