Utility Articles...

Why are these things so expensive? lol $100 is pretty pricey for me right now, I know you can use any 6 leather items and 6 metal items, but I would really like to have the dumbbells so I dont look like a weirdo around all the obedience people since Im a newbie and much younger than everyone at the trials around here lol. Right now Im teaching Shane scent discrimination on metal D-Rings and straps of leather from a belt. I'm pretty handy with tools and such, I made an agility tire jump, and a set of Open obedience jumps (the high and the broad) I wonder if I could make my own utility dumbbells?

Re: Utility Articles...

Is it something you could possibly find on E-bay or Craigslist? Or even the trading post area on here? Or can you possible use the human hand weights (Walmart carrys the lower weights pretty inexpensively. (Sorry, no exactly sure what you are talking about)

Re: Utility Articles...

The wood ones should be easy enough to make. Some thin flatboard (plywood), dowels and screws or bolts.

The metal ones might be a bit harder.

Re: Utility Articles...

Just found this place:

http://www.customcanine.net/21401.html

If I'm reading it right - the cost of a full set (12 articles) starts at $60.

Don't feel bad about looking weird! My TD use to use the round tin can thing that you place on those old jars and baby shoes, lol.

Re: Utility Articles...

There are OTCH competitors who use utility articles they made themselves, so don't feel bad if you use items you collect and/or make yourself!

I have two sets of utility articles, both double-bar (used with my GSD, my Aussie and my Chow). I've thought of selling one of the sets since it's unlikely I will ever compete in utility again (HOPE to, but life seems to be taking me in a different direction). I'll have to pull them out, clean them up and see if they're sale material.

Once the dogs learn scent discrimination, you can do so many fun things with it. I used to do a little show with my dogs and one of the things I did was tell people that my dog was psychic. I had made up a bunch of cards - aces and kings and queens - and put them on little stands so they stood upright for everyone to see. I'd put my dog on a stay with her back to the audience, have an audience member pick which card I would have the dog find, and then while I was holding that card I'd have someone put out all the other cards (on the floor). Then I'd have another audience member tell me where to put the card I'd been holding (and, of course, the only card scented by me!).

Then I'd tell the audience to really think hard of which card my dog was to find, and I'd send Kylee (a chow) out to find the card. As she dropped her nose to sniff each card, it appeared that she was looking at the card .. and when she'd pick up the correct card, the audience would go wild! It was so funny .. even adults were fooled at times.

I also did a quick trick where I had someone put a number of one dollar bills on the floor, and then I put a twenty dollar bill out and told everyone that my dog knew the difference between the one's and the twenty. Of course, she always brought the twenty to me!

There are lots of fun things you can do with scent discrimination!
