Rally is really easy. I took Max through all leavels of Rally without taking one class. I just made up my signs and trained at home. I start all my pups off with rally. its fun and the dogs are on lease for the first leavel and you can talk to your dogs.
I'm hoping to show a few of my pups in Rally this year.

Yep, easy andfun! Balto loves rally, as soon as he sees cones and signs he's heeling like a champ and wagging his tail. Now I'm trying to convert that attention to obedience. Oh, and all the talking and praising is a big plus.
When Ciana does rally (we've been working offleash) I have to point which way I want to turn. But she doesn't get as much practices as Balto. That's going to change. Actually, I do all my training offleash, but Rally Novice is onleash. I've been attending Show and Goes, but working them offleash. |

Don't have any but here are a couple of videos. The first three are actual trials, the last one (a GSD) shows ateam going through a novice practice drill. Enjoy, it is a lot of fun!

I LOVE rally. If you are really good at heeling, you can do rally. If you are pretty good at heeling you can do rally. If your pup is not dragging you into the next county you can do rally.
Rally is SUPPOSED to be FUN. There are a bunch of signs and it is best if you know how to do each pretty well with your dog before you go into the ring. Then you only have to take the signs in order and get your dog to follow you through them. You can clap your hands, praise your dog, talk to your dog. You do not have to let anyone else touch your dog. You do not have to go over obstacles or jumps in novice. Old dogs, young dogs, energetic dogs, couch potato dogs -- all can have fun with Rally. Good luck.

The novice rally class is the easiest and simplest titling competition that AKC has. Your dog is on leash the entire time, you are the only team in the ring, and you can talk to your dog constantly to praise, encourage and command.
The exercises for novice (first level) are extremely easy. If you can coax your dog along with you so that you're not dragging him, you can earn the RN title. You need to practice walking on a loose leash, turning left, right and doing about turns (and the schutzhund style about turn where you turn left and your dog goes around you to meet back up in heel position). You need to practice calling your dog to you - while moving forward, you stop or back up a couple of steps while calling your dog to sit in front of you - and then you need to do finishes to heel position to both right and left (but you can use hand signals as well as verbal commands). It's really really basic and you'll find that it should follow right along with the training that you're doing. I would ask your instructor if she knows how to teach the proper left turns (where the dog moves their rump around behind you when you turn) - while this is not necessary in novice, all novice people should learn the proper left turns from the beginning so that they can go on to advanced and excellent levels without having to re-train the turns. A decent excellent level dog will back all the way around when a person pivots 360 to the left (in place). Rally is a good starting place if you want to go on to more difficult levels of training, and it helps if you kind of look ahead and consider what there is that you may want to do - and then adapt the rally training to help you advance to those other types of competition. Rally training can help you with regular competition obedience and agility, too, by providing you with the basics in training and the confidence to move on. Have fun with it!
