Daughter looking Columbia SC area
She definitely wants to rescue. Would like a GSD but is open...mainly wants a dog, finally! and is in a position to have one:
26 and in PhD program Univ SC
Has an inside only cat who has no dog experience
Small rental home with large fenced backyard (though she knows not to leave dog loose in yard while gone and that is not her intent-she also knows 4' chain link is not adequate but it should be for supervised outside)...Landlord is friend of friend and the intent is for her to be there the whole duration of about 5 years.
She wants a big friendly dog who will bark for "protection", a deterrent really..but mainly a more mellow dog (though she would excercise it)
She grew up with GSDs (learned to walk with the help of Linus)
She wants 3 year old or older adult dog. Not looking for a major "project" with issues -- just a companion...She works at the school so it will be mostly early morning, nights and weekends for interaction but she is a good "pet mama" with her cat and was responsible with our dogs.
Because of the cat I suggested she contact a rescue but I don't know who is / is not good.
Suggestions? She is not likely to get on a forum but if there are good folks I can hand her off too.
She spoke with a pound but since she has a cat they recommended a puppy. But she really does not want to take on a puppy right now........I know there are cat friendly dogs out there in foster care.
I am cautious because when I looked into adopting one, I had just spent thousands on medical bills for another dog and said I only wanted a healthy dog....and.....they tried to talk me into a dog with poor temperament and serious orthopedic and allergy issues.....and I was just not ready then and I don't think she is either.
