Default Johnstown, CO Bear, 2 yr old male

I am looking for a good home for my 2 year old longcoated German Shepherd, Bear. Bear is neutered, housetrained, crate trained, and knows basic obedience commands. He gets along with kids but I think with his high energy level, he would do better in a home with older children. He is used to cats and other dogs but I think he would be happier as the only dog and not having to share the attention. He is a loving dog, very food motivated, and a fast learner.

As he is a large dog and very easily stressed, I do not feel comfortable shipping him on an airplane so his new family will need to come pick him up in person.

He's beautiful. Have you contacted your local GSD Rescue group? Sounds like he would be easy to place.

Thank you. I did contact the local German Shepherd Rescue a week ago and they said they'd get back to me. Tried checking in again a couple days ago and they told me they could place an ad for me to list him (which I've already done through Petfinder) but that a temperment evaluation would be necessary for them to take him. I asked if we could set up a time to do that and am still waiting on a response.

His temper issues are he is an extremely fearful dog. He doesn't like being out in my fenced in yard when the neighbors are in theirs (which I think is at least partly related to the fact that one of the neighbors has kids who are constantly throwing things in my yard), he barks at the door/window whenever anyone or anything is near my house and if I open the door, he will run upstairs to hide. When guests come over, he hides behind me or runs away when I move. He has accepted guests in our house before and has never acted aggressively toward a human being but the fear is an issue I've never figured out how to correct. I've contacted his breeder about it several times over the past year and she keeps telling me just to scold him when he does it and he'll grow out of it. I really have no idea why he developed the behavior because he was well socialized as a pup in many public places (airport, hair salon, petsmart, shopping center)

The other "issue" is just his extreme level of energy. He recently injured my bulldog when he ran her over, knocked my daughter over bolting through the house, and has recently developed the nasty habit of occasional garbage digging and counter surfing. When my daughter has friends over, Bear has to stay in his crate so he wont knock anyone down. As I mentioned above, I cannot leave him out in my yard for hours on end and walking him just doesn't wear him out. He does not want to play fetch unless I am playing with my older Shepherd and then it becomes a nasty competition between them. The last time I played with them together like this, Bear tore up my older Shepherd's ear bad enough to require vet attention.

He's not a bad dog, he just has a lot of energy to burn and really needs an owner who is capable of managing it better than I can.
