jjk454ss I'm in lower MI too. Yes, we have the massasauga rattlesnake, which like you mentioned is poisonous but rare. We see Blue Racers and Garter snakes quite often out hiking, and yes he ignores them. I think this one may have got him a little excited because it was right outside his home or something. He kept his distance and was not in any danger. A garter snake that size could not even break the skin if it happened to get close enough to actually bite.

Susan_GSD_mom Where do you live? It looks like a garter snake, which is pretty harmless, tho they can bite. They are good for gardens, hope you didn't kill it.

In lower Michigan we do have a rattler, but they are rare. The only other snakes I have seen here is garter snakes.

wolfy dog Looks like a Grater snake, not poisonous but can still cause infection though the bite.
I have taught all my dogs to ignore them after the initial scare, mainly to give the snakes a break.

jjk454ss Kind of like some people with kids, we have to stop being over protective. Let dogs be dogs, he barked at a snake! Surprise, but he's still alive and kicking as I type this(I'm sure the snake is too). He never even got close the the thing, for crying out loud.

Castlemaid Depends where you live - around here nothing but harmless Garter Snakes. I wouldn't give it a second thought if we found one and it started hissing and striking.

CelticGlory Not only that, but snakes are needed to keep the pest population down too (rats, mice, lizards--the tiny ones, etc.). I hate when people kill them and have the nerve to complain about rats and other pests.

Now I'm no snake expert, but around here we have a lot of garter and black snakes more than anything. From the ones I see in this area, it looks like a garter snake, non-poisonous, but still, you don't want your dog to go after any snake because you just never know... and neither do they!!!

tottie86 I definitely wouldn't encourage my dog to go anywhere near any snake, regardless of whether it was poisonous or not. You just don't know.

I know a few dogs that have died from snakes bites and it's so sad.

Plus I live in Australia and we have some of the most deadliest snakes in the world.

Ha ... I knew someone would go there before me!! If it makes you feel any better I have been thinking the same thing since I seen the video. I don't know if the snake was poisonous or not, that is why I asked. Someone on Facebook almost lost their dog to a snake bite. Pretty dangerous stuff.
