wolfy dog The shelters often come up with these exotic breeds while most of them are mutts, resembling them maybe. I have personally seen how that goes: a stray dog comes in, the staff leaves through a purebred dog book and if one looks like the stray they'll label it the purebred or a mix from it. Most strays are a mix from the local street roaming dogs or an (purebred) escapee that is no longer wanted

stmcfred The black dog you are referring to is just a mixed breed from the pound. Not a hovawart and does not the traits as one.

As long as both are spayed/neutered then you wouldn't worry at all (make sure the female is spayed else you will suffer every couple of months lol, unless you want to breed which is obviously not)

huntergreen i have been in the same position. i had a gsd, roommate had a chow. i got married and my gsd was clearly missing his pal. wouldn,t eat, play and generally just layed on his mat. brought in a gsd pup and all was well again.

op, get a younger dog. preferably a puppy. most will say female, i had two males.

selzer Why do you want a dog your dog's age? That can be a bad mix. Really. It sounds like your dog needs more time and training, and exercise, and then proper management when you cannot supervise. Adding another young dog into that mix can actually cause more problems than it helps.

Then you have two dogs, possibly equal in status within your pack, and both requiring plenty of exercise and training.

You should NEVER get a dog for your dog. Your dog does not need to bathe it, train it, groom it, feed it, vet it, exercise it, etc. The decision to get a second dog should always be because YOU want another dog to work with, etc.

Be that as it may be. If you want a second dog, usually it is best to get the first dog pretty well-polished before bringing in a second dog. And then, go for a dog with a bit of a gap in age. Male-Male can be ok, especially if we are talking altered rescues. Male-female is usually ok -- always there are exceptions. Female-Female can be tricky regardless.

But getting a second dog because the first one is having some problems, is usually not a good idea. It's kind of like having a baby because your marriage is on the rocks.

DieselPup
New Friend for my 1 Year Old

I am looking for a new friend / companion for my 13 month old GSD. When I first got him, I had a girlfriend living with me and we had a smaller dog who he grew up with from 5 weeks old. We split and the smaller dog no longer lives there so Diesel has been alone with me for the past 4 months.

Diesel gets extremely upset when I leave for work for the day and he has acted out a few times while I've been gone this week.

I am looking to adopt another dog near his age and am curious if it would be better to get a male or female

Diesel has been fixed and is my best friend who is always by my side and demanding attention the whole time. Would getting another dog help or worsen the situation?

I recently found a 1 year old Hovawart female at the shelter near my house. Has anyone had experience with a GSD and a Hovawart?
