Security Question
While balancing on a piece of wood, two inches by four inches known as a 2x4, john and his friend sally both spotted a dalmatian inside a truck with sirens, headed to put out a fire. State what the 2x4 is made of.

YORCHI Train right away and all the time. Give rewards for good behavior and when they do what you tell them to do and correct them when they don't. I used to be able to hand my dog her treat in the mouth but now she gets really excited and bites for the treat and sometimes misses and catches our fingers so we moved away from that and into waiting till she sits and stares at us in the face or eye with no excited movement and then we put the treat down on the floor in front of her. I'm going to start incorporating the 'down' command now and then after she's comfortable with that we'll start doing 'down, stay' and then 'come' for her treat.

dawnandjr I start my pups before they leave my house. Can usually start some type of training, usually just a sit for a treat at 5-6 weeks. Work in a down as well. No reason not to.

Crackerjill Definitely start right away, and just be patient. We were amazed at how quickly Sandor picked up commands. He's 4 1/2 months and knows sit, wait, paw, down (inconsistently). He's also really good with sitting at crosswalks (we live in the city), and sitting when he see's other dogs approaching. He knows leave it (and does most of the time) and drop (and will allow you to open his mouth to get things). He will sit and wait for food and treats. He just had surgery so we are doing some free shaping with him, working into a spin command.

Bear L The first thing I taught when I got my puppy is she gets treated almost every time when she stares into my eyes and learning to keep the stare on the eyes rather than the treat to get the treat. The sit, stay, down etc came later after she learned to stare at me rather than the treat. The first few months was mostly working on just the stare. She was too bubbly to pay attention to me to learn anything else. The stare calms her down.

zetti Totally agree. The day they come home. We use food rewards & lots of happy talk. They should love it.

well said. Its a game that you and your puppy should enjoy . Dont expect too much and get frustrated if she doesn't learn as fast as you'd like her to.
