pyratemom I start out by "find a spot to pee." Raina will automatically start sniffing for a spot. As soon as she squats I quietly say, "good pee, good girl". When I first started her to go on command it took a little more convincing and repeating - find a spot, find a spot more than one time. After she caught on it was easy to transfer the command to poop too. When I took her on a long ride cross country to Michigan it came in really handy when we stopped. She could find her spot right away and then we could walk around more for a little exercise before leaving the rest area. Some people staying at the same motel I stayed at thought it was great and after I talked with them about it they decided to train their dog to go on command. It also comes in handy when we have the tropical rain bands and there is only so much time in between showers. Raina loves to get wet and would wait all day if it meant she got to stay out in the rain.

Lilie When I have a puppy, I'll take them outside and tell them "Potty!" I ignore everything else they try to do. I keep them on a long lead so they can only move so far around me. They'll walk around, sniff, try to play. I'll say "Potty!" and ignore everything else.

Once they begin to potty (one or two doesn't matter) I'll say quietly "Goooood potty....goooood potty!" Not in an excited tone as I don't want them to stop. Once they've completed their dooties - I'll throw a party. I no longer ignore them.

Now ALL my dogs know the Potty command. It doesn't matter where I am or what type of surface. If I say "Potty!" that is what they are going to do. I'll ignore them until they go. When they go, I'll say "Good potty" and they don't get a party anymore, but I'll stop ignoring them.

My2shepherds One mistake I made when training Athena was to praise her all the way back into the house and treat after coming back in... She then converted the praise to crossing the threshold of the door... and because she is more intelligent than I, it seems, it took a while for me to understand why she wanted to go out and right back in the door 200 times a day...

Dawg I praise mostly when she is done, but recently I have taken to do it at the beginning too. Not too much though let her relieve herself in peace.

Maybe its silly but i learned from my mom who raised 2 pups in healthy housetrained dogs,

Someone on a leerburg forum said 'if you don't look like an idiot when training your pup then you're doing something wrong'. So it's not silly to me at all)))))

I still praise and pet him, just because I like praising and petting him)))))))

It's really useful to be able to tell them to go sometimes, I do it if I'm meeting a friend for coffee out somewhere and I don't want them needing to go while we're there! Also useful last thing at night when it's cold outside and I just want them to go to the toilet and come in again without conducting their usual border patrol!
This! They catch on quickly, and having a "go potty" command comes in handy, especially with 4 dogs.
