Regarding the knife, for safety I am looking for a curved knife to cut him free if that ever happens again. Like this one (?):

Courtney Oh boy - would never think of that. Good idea with the pocket knife. Some dogs would start to panic. Glad he's ok.

FYI: be aware of lily pads

D fetched a toy from the water but took another path back and swam through a patch of lily pads. He briefly got tangled up, pulled himself lower in the water and just as I was ready to jump in, he broke free, never letting go of his toy. Scary and I will be careful next time and will be carrying a knife for sure.
