augerk He does fine with noise, but I think it is just the fact that he does not know if we are in trouble or not. He knows the command "wait" pretty well. so maybe I will expand on that a bit more. I wish he could come swimming too as he loves to swim and is an excellent swimmer but if one of his nails rips the vinyl liner it is just such an expensive fix! Especially since we just got a brand new liner this season after 13 years with our old one!!!

Traveler's Mom I don't have an answer, just some observations with my GSD. Large family reunion at a rental house with pool. He could care less about the pool when no one was in it. If someone was in it but not making noise, no problem. Put a couple of teenage boys in it and he hovered around the pool but no barking. But when a couple of girls were in the pool laughing and such, he went ballistic barking his head off and running around.
I noticed the same thing with our neighbor's little girl and the pool. As soon as she was in the pool either laughing or crying, he went nuts but when her brothers were in it yelling like no tomorrow, he just watches.

You could try to acclimate the dog to more noise and more people very slowly using treats maybe and eventually he'll realize no one needs a furry lifeguard.

SuperG Can I assume he doesn't do this when just you are in the pool? I take it he has been trained to stay out of the pool and even though he is heeding your training and request, he might just be expressing himself the same as if the pool edge is similar to a fence.....

Maybe acclimating him to the notion that all is well by staying at the edge of the pool when you are in it and allowing the dog to have contact with you...and slowly work some distance into it as the dog keeps it's crap together. If your pooch has a reasonable down/stay...I would utilize that and expand on it.

I used to watch my neighbor's dogs do the same when people were in their pool and it seemed to work itself out over a short period of time. I'll have to remember and ask them how they dealt with it.

It's a shame you can't have your boy in the pool with you.

Pool Help!!

My 1 year old dog is half German Shepherd, half lab. He loves swimming himself, but today was the first time we had him out in the backyard while we had people over to go swimming in our inground pool. He was freaking out and barking/trying to jump in the water with the people swimming. We think he is doing this because he believes that they are in trouble. We have a vinyl liner in the pool so just letting him swim is not an option we are thinking of for an answer. Today we put him inside in the crate because he did not stop barking. However, since the summer is just beginning, we would like to have him outside enjoying the weather with us. Any suggestions on how to fix this would be great! Thanks!!
