Packen Cool pool A fence is a good idea, most kid safety fences are very well designed and almost transparent. One of my dogs is a water addict and would prefer to live in the pool, the other one is neutral. The kid fence works very well, I let them swim occasionally but it is not ok for them to go in/out as they please.

New puppy and pool

We just got 8 week old Zoe on Sunday. Here is part of the backyard with the pool. Yesterday she became a bit more curious of the pool and fell in. She is now being more careful walking around it, (not scared, cautious) She may end up wanting to swim in it when she gets older and that is fine with me. It is great exercise.

I plan on teaching her when it is okay to go in and when it isn't.

sparra Depends on the dog......our pool is fenced as we have young children but I use the pool yard as a time out for the dogs like if I can't be watching them with the kids in the backyard or if we have guests over. They have never jumped in on their own but they do if we are in it so they know how to get out so it doesn't worry me.

elisabeth_00117 Dogs are allowed in my parents pool when we allow them to be.

The pool is however fenced in, and they are not unsupervised outside for even a second.

I show my dogs where the stairs are by having a lead on them and bringing them to the stairs and into the water, then leading them out. Usually after one or two times, they are jumping off the side into the pool and going to the stairs.

zyppi I have an automatic pool cover because I don't want dogs or children to be in the pool without supervision.

For the record, I don't leave my dogs out when I'm not home.

Alena Gonzalez Haven't brought my GSD home yet but we have a pool and my plan is to just stay outside with her and train her when she can and cannot get in. I'm hoping my plan works but I love having a pool and I hope she enjoys it. With my little Yorkies we would put them in the deep end and call them to the steps and make them get out they did not like it at all but we want them to be able to save themselves if they fall in, dogs are natural swimmers so as long as they're shown where the exit is they should be fine. I can't tell from the picture if there is grass anywhere in the backyard. We have a decent amount of grass so my plan is to train her to go to the same spot ;-)
