Last night I noticed that he couldn't see anymore and was bumping into stuff. I decided it was time. it was seemingly effortless for him with the baking soda and vinegar method. I stayed with him. it is sad to say goodbye to these little friends.
Thanks for your support.

Thanks everyone. They are super sweet; dogs in a rodent body. I think they are so misunderstood by people who never had the time to meet them personally.
Every time a rat dies, it is like losing a dog. I dread putting him to sleep.
I have a few more weeks, hopefully I get the sign to do it at the right time.

|dogfaeries||I'm so sorry. I've had rats in the past as pets, and they were so sweet. They just have such short lives. I don't think you're doing the wrong thing. If he's going downhill, then the odds are that he's not going to get better.|

|HarleyTheGSD||I'm so sorry. It is a very difficult decision to make, but what is comes down to is this; is the animal suffering? Watching them suffer is also a very difficult thing. Do whatever you feel is best. I wish the best for both of you.|

PTS my rat :(
I have a three year old neutered male rat who has always been fat and sweet. He started to drag his rear end and his tail over the floor. He is unbalanced and falls off the ledges and is also losing weight. So I put him in a separate cage with one level, away from his sisters so he wouldn't fall anymore. That was so sad as they evidently tried to get to each other. I gave his sisters to a nice girl since I wasn't planning on any rodents for as long as DDog lives. He really tries to eat them whenever he gets the chance.
I think I could keep him (the rat) alive for quite some time but we will go on a two week vacation next month during which he will be completely alone. So I am planning on letting him go to the bridge before I leave. Is that premature? Is it fair? It is so sad to see him like that. Arghh, why do rat lives such short lives.....
He might die before that time even, I hope.
