Kayos and Havoc Thanks for rescuing Jericho! He looks lovely!

If he has spent the last year of his life in a 5 x 10 pen with little interaction then he has no idea how play or how to relate. But you can fix that.

MRL posted a great link. Play, walk, train and jsut hang out together. He may never be a big cuddler but then again he may grow into it.

I would crate train him but not use a soft crate, use an airline or wire crate.

MaggieRoseLee Time, treats and frequent walks and PLAY should help settle him in. His entire life just flipped upside down so he's trying to work his way thru it (and heck, for all he knows you may suddenly disappear from his life like his last owners).

You working on this?

And at 1 yr old he IS still a puppy so all of this would work too..

Good luck!

DJEtzel Welcome from Kalamazoo! He is a cute dude.

HappyFurKid Congratulations! He's a beautiful pup (at 1 year old, he's still just a pup)! You've only had him 2 weeks, so he's still adjusting to the changes and the loss of his first owner. If you start training him like Harley and gsdsar mentioned, and give him plenty of play time with you, you'll find that he'll build that bond with you pretty quickly. Before long you'll be posting things like "help, my GSD wants to cuddle with me all the time!" lol His true personality probably hasn't come out with you yet because he's still adjusting. I'll be anxious to see how it goes for you. Keep us posted.

P.S. Thanks for giving him a home when his owner decided he didn't have time for him!

HarleyTheGSD Welcome! And what a beautiful boy you have!
Clicker training is great. It'll be fun for you, and your dog.
All dogs' personalities are different. I have two GSDs, and they are complete opposites.

gsdsar Congrats on your new boy. GSD are an amazing breed and bind very strongly to their owner. But not all are cuddly dogs. So that's not abnormal.

Best thing you can do to build your bond is training. Classes, or on your own. But they thrive on structure and learning and working.

Lots of walks interspersed with training sessions will go a long way!

Good luck I know you guys will be best buds!!!

New GSD owner (just adopted a 1 yr old GSD)

Hi all
Recently joined the forum after adopting a 1 year old male from a teenager who didn't have time for him. A coworker has his littermate so had info on the breeder, temperament, etc. He is fantastic, I've renamed him Jericho.
I'm new to the breed, but had a great dane for 9 years who I lost last Aug, and a mutt for 11 years who I lost suddenly on 5/2. Jericho was kind of a shock to say the least. I got him on Memorial Day, and I think we're just struggling to connect right now. He came from a farm life, in a 5x10 pen outside in the yard by himself all the time.
Things I'm not used to:
-he doesn't cuddle, would prefer to lay on the floor in the dining room while i'm in the living room. (unless it's nighttime, then he wakes me up every 3 hours for me to pet him and he goes right back to sleep)
-i can't figure out what he wants to chew. doesn't get excited for frozen marrow bones or cow knuckles, just peanut butter frozen in kongs.
-he just chewed through a brand new Noz2Noz nylon crate...

So far it's been 2 weeks, $800, and I'm just hoping it gets better. It's not terrible...but since we're not "connected" yet there's no real payoff yet...
