middleofnowhere In situations like this, you need to go with your gut. You did the right thing and your judgement was impecable (sp?) -- you came out unharmed, the police intervened, hopefully the woman was able to leave the scum and stay away. (often they are not personally able to do this.)
Thanks for having the personal presence to do this.

Rocket As a prior military man and now a firefighter I have to say you took a huge risk not knowing if he was armed or if he was on some illicit substance that could have fueled a much more serious/violent response on his part.

BUT I think you made the right decision for you. You had a powerful and very attentive protector with you that was ready to (and did) step up and intervene to keep the assailant at bay.

So I guess my honest thoughts for you are this: BRAVO!! you were in a situation warranting action and you took it, and saved a life! That's hero stuff. I'm impressed with you and your decision.
However, please be cognizant of the legitimate risk of intervening as a civilian and don't make a habit of this. I have run too many calls responding to a scene where a "good samaritan" ends up in the hospital with injuries trying to protect a helpless party from assault.

FWIW the shootings in Vegas this past week killed 3 people, 2 police officers and one "good samaritan" (who was legally carrying a firearm) that tried to intervene to stop the active shooter only to have a second one shoot him in the back.
This isn't to scare you, just to shed some light on the often subtle nuances of domestic violence that get over looked in the heat of the moment.

Again I applaud your response and I think you did the right thing!

One more thing... You referred to your roommate as "he", why did "he" let you handle the assailant while he called 911? I don't mean to sound like a chauvinist, I'm just curious.

Susan_GSD_mom You did the right thing. I once did something that had the potential of being as serious as what you did, my 12 yr old niece was walking home from a corner store, and two beefy jerks followed her home, we could see them from the window. I put my Shadow (110 lbs of bone and muscle) on a leash ran out the door and went to meet her. The idiots were about 10 ft. behind her, ogling her, when they spotted Shadow and me. I called to her to let her know we were there, and as soon as they saw Shadow they did an about turn and ran. I'm only 5'4", didn't have a plan, but fortunately it didn't go that far.

Being courageous doesn't rule out fear--but you did the right thing in spite of it.

Susan

BorderKelpie Wow.

You and Bane are simply awesome.

Thank you.

Sabis mom I applaud you, and Bane.

I remember a cold, snowy night and a bleeding, crying woman. She was wearing a t-shirt and jeans. No socks, no shoes. She had taken off her bra and was using it as a collar for the Shepherd that stood beside her keeping watch and periodically licking the tears from the womans face, because the 911 operator had warned her to restrain the dog. She hid in a filthy alley for 15 minutes because not one neighbor would help, or even offer a coat or blanket.

We should always help, as best we can. Even if it's just a call, or a smile.

BowWowMeow Bravo to you for protecting that woman. You are a role model for all men and women. Thank you!!!!!!!!!!

And I truly hope she is able to get the help that she needs.

onyx'girl I read this post with my body tensing up. You did what was right, and Bane acted appropriately. I applaud you. And am glad it didn't end another way. I hope that poor women can get some support and help.
I was going into a grocery store when a couple were leaving. The man was spouting off with his partner trailing 10 paces behind. His degrading rant was so sad and I wish I had the courage to get her away from him.
I still think about that and what I should have, could have, would have done. And that poor woman also had no courage. YOU did! Thank you.

Tratkins Well done! I think if you had NOT done anything at all, you would be more disappointed.
