dawnandjr I actually think the pup should stay with mom longer, not shorter. Minimum of 10 weeks. By then mom would have naturally weaned and taught some life lessons to the pup. You can vaccinate at 9 weeks with a 5 way combo and take home at 10 weeks safely. I raised a singleton last summer. I was very worried about the interaction with other puppies not having any litter mates. I took this pup to three different places for training during the week and a socialization on the weekend. This was after 8 weeks of course. He did not do well with lots of puppies around. Was not used to it. He did better with socialization in a smaller setting. Our one class when it was time for play time, he did best with just one other puppy to play with.

Maxil dogs get power from there mother's milk , the longer it keeps Brest feeding the healthier she is.
taking a puppy from his mother at 45 days is good as vets said , but also 2 months is better because its the time it finishes Brest feeding

selzer Folks, in a perfect world, this would work out. However, since we don't know how well protected the little guy is from parvo/distemper, nor whatever another breeder's litter is, it is just scarey all around.

I would not foster a singleton from some other breeder in with my puppies. I have put a large singleton in with a larger litter, but as it was a couple weeks younger, I could only do it when I was right there. You can never tell whether a dam will be ok with an outsider coming in either. Like putting Odie's puppies in with Jenna's so they all get yard time. That works if Jenna isn't out there. Well, it works for Mofassa, not Morgan -- she's a little too rough for the smaller puppies.

If the puppies are all about the same age and size, then all you have to worry about is introducing parasites and diseases. And it is a scary thought. You can be pretty sure a pup from another litter on your property doesn't have anything catching, but an outside pup?

Leaving a singleton with their dam for the whole eight weeks is better. I think ten weeks is probably better yet. Can you bring it home and make it work at 7 weeks? Yes.

Being a singleton does present its own set of problems, and you need to be prepared for them. Yes the pup will not have learned some of the stuff that puppies learn from their littermates. I don't think it is insurmountable. Just something that you be aware of, and try to fill.

But as a puppy buyer I would not want to take my pup home at 4 weeks. All pups grow fast but they need to be with the mother IMO for development and health reasons. I don't know why that would be different for a singleton?

7-8 weeks is a good time to go home. Good luck.
Agree although the 8 weeks is best. The idea of mixing w/ another litter is also a good one so he gains those skills taught by littermates.

Good luck. It is very young still at 6 weeks.
Agree.

LaRen616 In some states it is illegal to sell a puppy before it is 8 weeks old.

ConnersThor update: i talked to the breeder last night, and shared my concerns, and she apologized and said she meant to say 6 weeks, which is when they send most of their pups home. makes me feel better, and he will actually be 7 weeks when we can pick him up, due to work hours since DH and i will pick him up together. thanks for the swift responses!
