I guess this is why it was so shocking that this came and went without any prior symptoms. If only they could talk...
Thank you and everyone else for your kind loving thoughts.

I am sorry for your loss. Poor Elana.
I couldn't begin to understand what happened.. I've never heard of anything like this (I am far, far from any kind of dog expert, so don't be surprised on that front). I read it and my first thought was poison of some sort.
I hope you find the cause. My heart goes out to you and your family.

We lost Cujo to cancer, some sort of mass in his back affecting his hind legs. It killed him. But it took longer than it did with your girl -- about a month, from the point when we first saw him miss a step, stumble a little. We had him to the vet several times and they were considering spondylosis, spondylitis, and other stuff. But when the meds did not help, and we were taking him in to put him down, and got him in there, and he looked at the vet, and just passed away.
I lost my Arwen to Hemangiosarcoma. She did not have the same symptoms. In fact, the only real symptom she showed was leaving a bit of food in her dish. She was out running around like a puppy that morning.
Cujo showed the glazed over look, and the back end pain.
Tori too. Her back end went and I rushed her to the vet, and they gave me meds, and I gave them to her, and she got worse over the weekend, and I took her back, and they did x-rays, and well, we ended up putting her down, she was failing so badly, so quickly. But no blood in the stool.
It definitely sounds like your girl bled out. The low platelets, and the fearful, thunderstorm behavior, and then the bloody stool. It sounds like something burst in her, and she bled out. I'm sorry. There wasn't probably much you could have done for her. It was all so sudden.
