|huntergreen||we came with our first, sat on the floor with the baby and let our gsd come over and sniff. licked babies head and rarely left the babies side after that. that gsd adopted her as her charge till the day he died, 7 years later.|

Thats not a doll and if it is its a very convincing doll,
On a closer look that's a real baby. He has the typical newborn patchy hair they all seem to have.

You would hope it was a doll......who would do that to a newborn......
We just didn't make any fuss when it came to our baby and the dogs. Our dogs were kept at a distance.
No licking, sniffing......if I was feeding/holding/interacting with the baby they were on their beds asleep or just quietly watching.....just wasn't a big deal. Our dogs just behaved as though the baby had always been there......probably cause we did.

Yeah my first reaction was it's a doll and I cracked up but looking closer I'm not as sure. Too bad we can't go back and delete things. If that is a real baby then God help that child.
Back to the original question, when my mom was pregnant she had our GSD get used to all the baby stuff before she delivered. While she was in the hospital my dad would bring home things that smelled of the baby, such as the receiving blanket and leave the items around the house. Then he brought home the infant seat with the blanket in it. When they brought the baby home they would slowly leave him out of reach but within scent reach to allow our dogs to get used to him from a distance. Don't know if gender of the dog matters in acclimating but ours was a female GSD and the cocker spaniel was a male.
*edit* The hair looked fake to me at first but then after I posted my laughter I noticed the legs and realized it. But it was too late to delete my post. My bad.
