lhczth No, you do not want to tranquilize Samson. When I flew to Germany I had a direct flight so can't help with that part. Lufthansa was great to work with.

Samson36 Thank you for answering...I will definitely check with Lufthansa, but I wrote here too, maybe someone had this experience before....
I dont want to tranquilize Samson, but I was reading all these horror stories with American Airlines with cats and dogs escaping, and I was afraid something might happen....if he paws at the door a few times it might open ....
I have no problem checking and rechecking in Frankfurt....its gonna be a little hard though, considering I also have a cat and 2 kinds with me
Thanks again

pyratemom I would check with Lufthansa on the airline questions. They can answer them more accurately. Just a note, Raina flew to the US on Lufthansa when she was a pup. My friend in Germany picked her out and sent her to me using Gradlyn Kennels as the shipper and they use only air controlled compartments to ship animals. She was in great shape when she arrived, just a bit tired of being in a crate at only 12 weeks. Don't feed your dog the day you fly as it can cause upset stomachs and don't feed a whole meal when you get where you are going. Give just a little food at first. I would not tranquilize your dog unless your vet agrees it would be necessary. Airline workers will not feed the dog but they may give it water. You will probably need to reclaim the dog in Frankfurt as it is the first stop in a new country. Good luck and have a nice flight.

wolfy dog Call the airline with these questions. Regarding the crate, I agree. Maybe get one of these metal enclosed ones. You probably have to recheck him as soon as you land in Frankfort for customs.

Flying to Europe with a German Shepherd- please help!!

Im a newbie here, just registered, but Ive been reading your forums for quite a while now.
I have a 15 month old German Shepherd, Samson, and in about 4-5 months I will have to fly with him from Denver to Bucharest, Romania.
This will be the first time Im flying with a dog, so I am really scared and don't know what to expect. And, of course,I have a gazillion questions, so if you guys could help me, I would really really appreciate it.
The flight should be Denver- Frankfurt-Bucharest with Lufthansa.
Do I have to pick Samson up in Frankfurt and recheck him, or they will give him to me in Bucharest?
Should I sedate him? He is pretty comfortable in his kennel at home, but he is a pretty crazy/ hyper dog and also super strong, so Im afraid when he will hear those airplane engines, he's gonna go crazy and open that crate somehow.
Im also travelling with my cat in cabin, so I think I know all the required paperwork for this kind of trip (we did this route with Sam the cat about 6 times now )

I would really appreciate any kind of info you could give me, as I am a little scared flying with a giant dog across the world
Thank you so much!
