This may be a sign of my anxiety, but in this case I would worry about what was imprinted on Shadow. I would increase training with owners and others around other dogs in a controlled environment (i.e., not a dog park but a class environment) to make sure Shadow did not pick up superstitious fears.
Just a thought

Guys 'protection' doesn't have to be a full blown "I'm taken' the big dog out" frontal attack. Puppies have a sense self preservation and will bite if they really feel threatened. It's entirely possible that in the fray the puppy nipped or bit the attacking dog because it sensed the level of danger to itself and it's protector.
The OP hasn't been back so hopefully all is o.k.

I wouldn't expect protection of any sort out of a 16-18 week old puppy. I expect to protect a puppy that age. A pup needs to have confidence in me, not the other way around.
I hope your hand gets better soon.

Maybe I'm missing something but how many times have we seen threads about "protective" puppies and been informed by very knowledgeable people that it doesn't work that way?
OP, I'm sorry you were bit but I cant believe a 4 month old puppy was doing more than trying to be involved in what he likely interpreted as a play session he wanted in on between you and the other dog. And why did the dog lock in on you and not someone else? Were you the only ones there? Just trying to piece it together.

I got bit pretty good tonight by a GSD too. Two punctures in my hand.
I went to work and agility class just fine, though. Dog bites are 10x more mental than physical. Think positive!

|Buggibub||Just as a FYI, here in TX, since bites were reported, shadow should be quarantined as well. If something comes up, you can request a 10-day "home quarantine" where A/C will come inspect your living arrangements to make sure your dog can't get loose. If you are requested to place your dog in quarantine, specifically request the home quarantine, otherwise the pup will end up spending 10 days at the A/C crates, or in your vet's care for 10 days (on your dime).|

My hand is on the mend now, but went bad real fast, less than 24hrs, I needed to go to hospital and had to for 4 days to get IV antibiotics along with oral
Did you view my thread at all last few days?
