This is sort of related but.....I've actually had my lenses "protect" my eyes during certain types of cooking. I am famous in my family and among my friends for the Chex Mix I make. Over Christmas and for our summer family time at the cottage, I will make over 12 batches. I have my own method and use a certain microwave (way faster than the oven). You have to take it out and stir it every 2 minutes. This past Christmas, I was making several batches and felt my eyes getting really irritated. At first I had no idea why since I've done this for many years since my grandparents were not able to keep up the tradition. Then I realized I had glasses on. Apparently when I have contacts in, the steam coming from the bowl doesn't bother me and I can reach in and stir but without lenses in my eyes, it's painful. I've also noticed that cutting onions doesn't make me cry like it did when I was a kid, before I switched to contacts.

Syaoransbear Had glasses, got contacts when I was 11 and wore them for about 13 years, now I'm back to glasses. Now I'm looking up laser eye surgery.

I found contacts more annoying than glasses and more costly in the long run. And it was just a bother needing to put them in and take them out all the time. At least with glasses they just fall off my face and don't ruin my eyes when I take an impromptu nap in them.

At some point I had night and day contacts that you could sleep in and those were wonderful. Those are the only contacts I prefer over glasses.

readaboutdogs I tried wearing contacts a couple of times. Probably the lenses are better now days, as the last time I tried was 20 years ago! The problems I had was one eye would always make a build up on the lense even though I cleaned them every nite, never slept in them. Also if windy and dust gets under the contact, very uncomfortable! I guess I'm also used to the protection my glasses give to dirt, etc flying around! I did like the freedom of not always wearing glasses and agree the vision is better! I have heard if you eventually need reading glasses, they used to have you wear just one contact to make the adjustment? That could be old school too! With laser I believe you still have to wear reading glasses if you need them.

Msmaria like shade I have been using contacts for over 18 years. I also use the no rub lens cleaner 99 % of the time. at first they can feel a little uncomfortable and a little awkward to put in. But once you get the hang of it its like second nature. Why do I prefer contact lenses? Because I am so blind my glasses are very thick lol..
Tips use rewetting drops if your eyes get a little dry from the contacts. keep your follow up appointment with your optometrist just to make sure you're not having any issues. My son wanted contacts but every time he put them in,his eyes would get itchy. we found out he cant use contacts.

Shade I've been wearing glasses for 18 years and contacts for 14 years, I much prefer my contacts

1. How often do you need to clean them?

I use a no rub solution, so pop them into the container and in the morning they are ready to go. They're not as "clean" as if I scrubbed and cleaned them but it's so easy it use that method 99% of the time

2. Are they difficult to put in your eyes?

At first yes but you really do get use to it quickly

3. What is the differences between contact lens and eye glasses?

As others have notes, the peripheral vision is excellent, you don't need prescription sunglasses, no annoying cleaning of your glasses multiple times a day, and in general they are SO much easier than glasses.

4. Is there anything else I need to know?

Put them in before you do your makeup, get good quality lenses and talk to your doctor about daily vs monthly. Finding the right match is key to comfort and effectiveness

Stosh I wear Air Optics and they're really comfortable. I sleep with them in but take them out to soak while I'm in the shower. They're bi-focals

I am interested in getting contacts and I have some questions to the people on this forum who wear contact lens.

1. How often do you need to clean them?

As needed. Rinse them well daily. It's really important to have clean hands when you handle your contacts.

2. Are they difficult to put in your eyes?

Once you get used to putting something in your eyes, it's simple.

3. What is the differences between contact lens and eye glasses?

Your field of vision is so much better. It's also much more convenient.

4. Is there anything else I need to know?

Invest in sunglasses. Dust in your eyes / on your contacts hurts! Don't sleep in them, even if they are rated for it. Your eyes need to breathe and refresh.
I'm also part of the Acuvue Oasys fan club. There is just something about them that you can't beat for comfort and clear vision.

Thank you!
Best of luck with the new contacts.

LoveDogs I have contacts. Clean them nightly but am sensitive to cleaning solutions so can only use clear care. I could put them in without issue and take them out without issue but at first it would take me forever because it was something new. It gets to be easy after a week or so. I don't wear glasses ever really. With contacts I find my vision more clear and find that I have less headaches as well. One word of advice, if your doctor prescribes a brand that doesn't feel right, let him know because all contacts are not alike.

LoveEcho I have contacts. I clean them daily (or, well, I try). They're not difficult to put in once you get the hang of it. When I first got them, I held my breath so long in the Dr's office trying to put them in that I almost passed out. The girl at the counter said it's really common, lol.

My biggest reason for wanting contacts over glasses (aside from needing thick glasses because my rx is so strong) is because I am a very active person. Hiking, running, riding my horse, etc is a real pain in the neck when wearing glasses. I also used to have to scuba dive daily for work, and using Rx masks was horrible and horribly expensive. As others have said, brand definitely matters- I've had horrible lenses, and lenses that you can leave in for a week and not feel (Acuvue).

I will be getting LASIK eventually.
