kfcarroll Gunther (15 months) has the same issues. I took him through obedience 101 twice to get him used to being around other dogs that he couldn't go off and play with. (He had a part-time playmate--our neighbor's dog--whom he loved.) His barking is not aggressive. It's more like, "Hey! That's another dog! I wanna say hi!" Same thing on walks. Good news is, during the second turn in obedience, he was relaxed and focused on me when he knew I had the treats. I definitely saw some improvement. Anyway, I guess this post is to say, "You're not alone."

carmspack "Aries hackles went up and he got real anxious looking and started barking really mean sounding. Now we are confused as to whether or not we should even try and take him to a dog park(we are currently looking for a good group training trainer). Im sure if we knew his background, we could figure it out but he is 3 and we know nothing. "

NOOOOO . No dog park .

Sri Almost everyone on here will say not to take him to dog park. When you see a dog, work on engaging him with you. Use food, toys etc. You could take hin for a walk hungry and use his kibble plus bits of chicken and steak to keep his focus on you. If possible curve away from the dogs. Tell him leave it , etc.

I'm currently reading Click to Calm. While your dog may not be aggressive (neither is mine), I think it is a great book for everyone.

Even before you get into a group training session, work on this every day during your walks. Some resources :

MrsPerkins Well here is an update from today, we walked him and there were 2 dogs in their backyards with tall fences, one of them barked but it wasnt a mean sounding bark but the other one kinda growled and barked pretty mean sounding. Aries hackles went up and he got real anxious looking and started barking really mean sounding. Now we are confused as to whether or not we should even try and take him to a dog park(we are currently looking for a good group training trainer). Im sure if we knew his background, we could figure it out but he is 3 and we know nothing.

Sri Group training classes? He will learn to work with you in the presence of other dogs and people.
Although if he gets too excited, you will have to work first on what Carmen says.

carmspack might be a dog who was socialized to visit and play with a lot of dogs and gets over excited, expects to go and play . I would slowly start to change his focus by making yourself even more interesting and rewarding.

Barking non aggressively at other dogs

HI! My family and I recently rescued a GDS from a family that could not take care of him. He is about 3 years old and is pretty much a good dog all around. The main issue we seem to be having is him barking at other dogs during walks. His barks are non aggressive. It starts with a whine and then quiet barking and then really loud barking. We are trying to correct it by saying no and getting his focus off of the other dog. He also does it while in the backyard and wont if we are out there playing with him. We aren't sure what to do next. He wasn't socialized much in his previous home so we would like to start that but not sure how to start. Any advice is much appreciated.
