msstone The other thing I have to say a furever home this will be. My GSD all have lived to be at least 10 most 12 -15. Except Max who caught Blue Tongue which invaded our valley in 03 50 dogs died that year. A lot of deer and elk also died and some cattle. SHe would have a good and loving home. Thanks Merle

SummerGSDLover What ever happened with this dog?

SummerGSDLover Like David said, try not to focus too much on the dogs past. just use training to bond with her and love her if you're going to keep her. I would recommend finding an LE with MWD experience if you're going to rehome. Thank you for pulling her. good luck!

But there is no bomb. So she can't think that.
I agree, they should only alert when they find explosives material, but then again my dog will sometimes false alert if I have a high value reward (her ball).

She could be resource guarding you, but it sounds like otherwise everything is great, so I'm sure you could work through it. Perhaps see if you can get a trainer over to observe her behavior a bit and give you some ideas on how to work through it?

This is a great story, she's a beautiful dog and I hope it works out for you!

glowingtoadfly It is wonderful that you are willing to work through her issues, and that you brought her home in the first place.

David Winners If the dog is responding to something besides odor, it's false responding, which is no big deal for you because the dog is not operational. It only takes a few repetitions for the dog to figure out it can get rewarded for false responding.

If you want to continue the detection work for fun, you can get into Nosework, which you and the dog may really enjoy. I would recommend getting the Andrew Ramsey DVDs (at a minimum) and finding a trainer in your area. Any LE trainer will be able to show you the ropes of doing detection, and Nosework is getting more popular.

If the dog is only 2, it was probably dropped from the program for various reasons. I wouldn't worry about why too much unless it was for nerve issues. Just train the dog in front of you and don't get too wrapped up in the back story IMO.
